I do not get all the hatred for this game.
Ok, it's definitely not perfect, and too old to get fixed. But...
It mixes RPG and HoMM styles, both in a quite nice way. Quests and side quests are well built, and often give two ways to complete according to your character. The "alignement" style progress means that your decisions have consequences, on the story and on your character.
I played all 3 characters, always choosing a different path and a different army (mage with order and magic creature, warrior with full strengh and "dark" paladin with bandits and undead, she wasn't happy with my decisions), and the gameplay changes quite a bit with every build. You can, mix units of different alignments at the cost of morale. Unit abilities are really useful (most game like that you just abuse archers and that's enough...), terrain, although limited, can change the course of battles.
The biggest flaw imo is that armors "sets" are mostly incomplete (with the ending telling you that the game will continue, i guess it should have been further implemented, although you're quite OP at lvl 30 anyway).
...and the horse... not being able to change direction without rushing forward, that's a pain...
I got 2-3 crashes when fast travelling. And got stuck once walking. But most of the time, just moving around allows to "unstuck" the character.
