When I first got the game I struggled with the tutorial a bit and almost regretted my purchase, but once you get past that the real fun begins - I've done two playthroughs now so feel qualified to say that it genuinely is a fun game BUT it's more of a skill based one and so while it could be easier, earning the skills and making sharp turns with sails almost feels MORE rewarding as you start getting the hang of it.
Combat is the not easiest at the beginning when you lack a decent sized ship and special powers but late game with better ships, more fun magic (where would we be without haunted ship?) and a better understanding of the mechanics make it worth while. I quite like the unique art style and even sailing around doesn't get too boring since there's new battles, ports to conquer and little whale animations to keep the visuals alive. Bigger ships can be more of an inconvenience for agility despite higher 'health' and damage, but I think part of the fun is finding the ship that works best for your strategy, I like the galleon myself since it's a nice middle ground, but the game encourages you to try all of them with the different abilities for each ship.
Do I think it's for everyone? Perhaps not, it's very much a ship battle game with no first person pirate fighting, but honestly now I'm familiar with it I do enjoy that aspect, and strategising how to take over the best ports for profits/defence. I would like some kind of fast travel/warp when getting across from one side of the map to the other but it's a minor inconvenience at most.

I had read all the mixed reviews, set sail with low expectations, and those expectations were met.

There's plenty of strengths here. It looks and sounds great, controls are solid, narrative is concise, and there's little optional side features to challenge yourself with if you want. If you just want to cruise the seas and do some trading, this is serviceable. High points: there's no sense of urgency or ship morale to micromanage, the escort missions are fair (no scripted ambushes), and item system makes it clear which components are upgrades what you have currently equipped.
Everyone is already on top of the weaknesses. Progression is grindy, gameplay is repetitive, and there's no replayability beyond knocking out achievements like a chore. A lot of the design choices seem indicative of a grander plan that was scaled back along the way along side post launch patched concessions that there needed to be more to this game. Low points: NPC ships level with you and early game is extra tedious, map exploration is gatekept by needing to find cartographers to sell you tiny pieces of the world map, navel combat is monotonous and there's no real incentive to swap ships or to alternate strategies.
At times it was genuinely a relaxing and engaging experience, but I think it's fair to say it's not complicated and can get frustrating (don't attempt a boss fight without range 10 cannons).
If you aren't put off by the idea that this is a much slower paced game than it looks, you might enjoy it. Obligatory "get it on sale" recommended.

Its fun for about 5-6 hours before you realise its just more of the same as you progress. For a few bucks, sure, why not. Just don't go in expecting a sweeping nautical adventure.

It is such an underrated game. You will have fun after the initial learning period. the hotkey note is at the bottom of the screen when you are in ports. "I" and "M" are the only important UI on the sea and number key 1 is the most frequent key you will press. You may need some practice to use the cannons but skills can save your day. The problem of so many thumb down may be because of the limited weapon you have in the early stage of the game. When you have better ship, better cannon and mostly important better skills, you will find you can pack serious punches to your opponent.

This is a fun pirate game. I enjoy the fact you get to have supernatural powers in a boat lol. I love the speed boost one the most, gtfo there lol. I will say the contracts you get from the taverns do become repetitive which is a bit of a downer but the rest of the game is solid. With that said it is still good to do them to get supplies and money if needed.
ou will get your money wroth in this game, lots to do and enjoy! For game play check out my video here-
