Very difficult to be precise in pro-mode but it is a nice alternative to JR-Simulator. This game needs a lot of future updates to permit the control of more things and of course a new edition of lines in 4K full UHD, we are not in 2001 anymore! 1080 is insufficient to modern 1980-pixels resolution screens. Nice video sync but also needs some degree of turning head vision to the sides windows in cabin, maybe a little walk also out the cabin in terminal stations in the free mode. Overall this game it's not bad at all but it's not perfect. Please do more lines and do not exaggerate the price! Is very Enjoyable but not if overpriced.

It's a very beautiful game.
It really feels like visting Japan.
The visuals, music and sounds are great.
The downside is that the gameplay is a bit stale (with a keyboard at least). It's very easy to mess up. You have +-1 meter and +-1 second span to aim for if you want to achieve perfection. It's not an easy feat for beginners. Try not to aim for perfection and just enjoy the atmosphere of authentic japanese setting.
Get it on sale.
Overall I would give this a solid 7/10.

Unlike every other train simulator software I know, this game uses real recorded video of the scenery and stations to provide the player with a cab view unlike any other experience. Completing parts of the game unlocks the possibility of driving during different seasons throughout the year, as well as information teaching the player about the landmarks in this area of Japan. It's a very poetic game, with a typically Japanese touch to the gameplay, the in-game hints and the sound effects. It is a great present to give to a person who enjoys trains, train-driving simulation games or Japanese culture.

If you have used the JR East Train Simulator demo, then this should be OK.
There is a lot of driving to do before you become competent: the rewards are colourful pages on attractions along the two rail lines.
I set my trains to have electric brake, as i am used to that from train sims.
A route is also now available for PS5.

Experienced on the Meta Quest 3. VR REVIEW ONLY!
You can view my 3D in VR gameplay here:
Yes, you can play this game in 3D in VR using the completely free Geo 11 3D driver mod (search it online). In case you don't know, this game is running on the Unity engine using DX11. Because it is DX 11, you can mod it to render SBS 3D with the geo-11 mod and then just use an app like Virtual Desktop or Bigscreen in order to view the SBS 3D in VR.
Japanese Rail Sim: Journey to Kyoto is actually a mix of HD rendered video and the 3D modeled inside of a train cab, thus giving you the illusion that you're operating a train in Kyoto. The result is a relaxing, beautiful, and realistic-looking experience. The game says sim, but it's really sim-lite (arcade).
I would love this game in VR with 3D rendered video (4K quality minimum) and a Train cab that is completely operational using VR motion controls. That would take this game to the next level in realism. In the meantime though, on a heavy discount, I would say this game is worth it for the 3D in VR experience (like playing a game at a 3D movie theater).
3D IN VR RATING: 7/10. I know the HD video is not 3D rendered, but it really tricks the mind when you're playing the game into believing it is.
