While Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her codename defusing bombs for the Global Defense Force, when evil transhumanist mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes the members of his cybernetic cult onto the streets of Neo DC, she knows it’s time to start causing explosions instead of preventing them. Her quest to slay Heskel leaves a trail of carnage throughout huge, multi-path levels filled with gigantic explosions, more secret areas than we can count, and inhuman foes behind every corner. There’s no regenerating health here; stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Shelly’s crusade to take down Heskel’s army will see her leave destruction in her wake with a wide arsenal of weapons, complete with alternate fire modes and different ammo types. Her signature revolver, the tri-barreled Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with both single shots and Old West-style hammer fanning action. Who needs a regular shotgun when you can load buckshot into your grenade launcher? Violent, over-the-top Bowling Bombs rip enemies apart with ease.

Alright so I'm currently playing through this game the 5th time now. First 2 times were the normal campaign on Maximum Fury, followed by the Aftershock campaign. Then I played both again on Angel of Death, and now I'm playing through Arrange mode, also on Angel of Death. I'm trying to get all achievements. You can already tell that I'm quite fond of this game, since I've already sunk nearly 100 hours into it.
The game is insanely fun if you like oldschool shooters, and since I'm a huge fan of games like Doom, Hexen, Blood etc., this game is right up my alley.
So let me talk about some aspects of this game. First off, Ion Fury overall is a fairly fast-paced, action packed experience with lots of enemies to kill and weapons to choose from. There's also a huge amount of secrets to find. Movement in this game feels very fluid and the action barely ever stops. You're even rewarded for blowing up enemies through small armor shards.
There's also quite a bit of platforming to be done, but most of it is only to find hidden items.
Vertical aiming can sometimes be a tiny bit wonky but it's hardly noticeable.
The main character is likeable, but her one-liners might get mildly annoying after a while, luckily she doesn't say those too often.
You have a variety of weapons to choose from. Each weapon has its advantages and is pretty creative. All in all the weapons feel very balanced. After the first few levels you never really have any ammo problems, not even on Angel of Death.
There's also active items like medkits, a radar or temporary powerups. Every weapon and powerup has their use, with the exception of the Nuva Chair, which is most likely just intended as some kind of joke. It can be used to reach high places, but you can also do the same with other methods, it's a waste of a powerup slot.
The game consists of several chapters, each with its own set of levels. There's 28 levels in the base campaign and 15 in the DLC. Some levels are fairly short and straight-forward, while others are complex and can take up to an hour, depending on how often you die and how thorough your exploration is.
The game is longer than you might expect and definitely makes the game worth its price. Depending on how much you decide to explore, it can take you roughly 15 hours to beat the entire game. The DLC only takes about half of that.
While the action never truly stops, the campaign does begin to drag a little during the last few levels.
This is probably one of Ion Fury's biggest strengths, of which it has many. The levels are full of detail, they're fun to explore and you can find something interesting in almost every other corner. The locations are fairly varied as well, even tho most of the game takes place in neon city locations or inside facilities. But there's also a bunch of interesting places like inside of a moving train, in a big stadium, an underground lab, a creepy mansion, and so on.
There's also always some interesting events happening in these levels. Walls explode to open up new areas, a truck crashes into a big gate, you literally watch a game of Tetris with warehouse containers being used as Tetris blocks, or at one point you're in a training course for policemen and have to shoot targets.
One of the best aspects of the level design also is that, as you approach the end of each level, the game actually tells you how many secrets you're missing, while also opening up all previous paths so you can look around the entire map as much as you want. You're never locked into the end of the level which is very nice for completionists.
So all my experience comes from the 2 hardest difficulties of the game. The game starts off pretty difficult and also stays fairly hard throughout its entirety. The first few levels are really punishing, giving you not too much ammo and health, unless you go for all the secrets and having lots of enemies. Of course you can also just pick an easier difficulty, but even if you already know the game, the first sewer level is a major step up in difficulty. After that, as you progress more and more into the game and get more weapons, ammo becomes a non-issue. You can basically use any weapon you want, as much as you want. The enemies themselves can still be deadly if you just rush into every new area, so even for experienced players, it's advised to be a little more careful.
The bossfights in this game can be pretty painful but all of them can be cheesed in some way, mostly thanks to the Double Damage powerup.
The DLC is a little more varied, the first half also starts off quite hard with a lack of ammo, but as soon as you get your vehicle, the game becomes a breeze. That is until it gets destroyed and you lose most of your inventory (again). The 2nd half of the DLC is somewhat tough, especially in the beginning.
The enemies in this game are quite varied and they all have their own behaviours, but after a while they become a little bit stale honestly.
The normal cultists, as well as the gray / blue cyborgs like to run at you, while others prefer to keep some distance or hide. Each enemy can be a danger to you if you ignore or overlook them, with some very striking examples. One being the Deacons, the flying red guys who shoot series of homing missiles at you. These are probably the deadliest enemy in the entire game, since they like to hide around corners and wait for you to run past them so they can ambush you from behind. Same with the red cultists, but at least you can hear them charging up their crossbow.
Even the normal goons can be really dangerous with their own dispensers, especially the blue ones that shoot grenades.
The smaller enemies, like the spiders or flying drones are not to be laughed at either. They often come in groups and can rack up damage pretty quickly.
The bigger enemies are probably the most interesting here. We have the Wendigos, ferocious beasts that will jump at you and try to rip you to pieces. These can be really deadly if you face them head-on or are unprepared.
The Treadkills on the other hand are underwhelming. They are slow, hulking robots but they barely do anything. Their slow, bouncy fireballs can easily be avoided and they're rarely ever an actual threat.
The centipedes are cool looking but pretty harmless.
The DLC introduces more variations to already existing enemies, making for a more varied experience. You also get 3 completely new enemies: the Laser Bots, who aren't all that threatening, and two different GDF troopers. One being insanely agile, sliding all over the place while firing his own double-penetrator at you, the other one being a slow, heavily armored guy with a devastating chaingun.
The Arrange Mode also adds these DLC-exclusive enemies to the base campaign, making for a much more interesting experience, since you don't just see the same 5-6 enemies over and over.
Lastly, the soundtrack of this game is phenomenal. Shelly's voice actress does an amazing job at selling the badassery of her character. Just like Heskel's voice actor, who does a good job at making him sound like an ignorant prick.
The music is very memorable and catchy, you never really get tired of it and it always fits the level well. The sound effects are awesome, they really make your weapons feel impactful. Things like the sound of reloading the loverboy or your penetrators just feel so refreshing.
The voicelines and sound effects of enemies as well, it makes them feel alive and you have even more fun blowing them up while they scream delightfully. Every enemy has their own way of revealing their current location or what they're doing. For example, you always know when a centipede or spider is nearby because their feet makes these insantly recognisable sounds when hitting the ground.
One of my favourites are the voicelines of the new GDF enemies, especially the agile ones who just sound like full on rednecks.

Don't think, just shoot!
If you grew up in the 90ies and are sick of these modern overcomplicated ego-shooters then this is the right thing for you.
