This game is really great. EU4 never really got me and I stopped playing after 27 hours of being mostly bored. Victoria 3 got me hooked big time (ca. 189 hours) and now Imperator Rome at 60+ hours. I really need to stop playing so I can focus on real life now ;).
What I like:
* historical period
* size of map (it's HUGE)
* incredible number of historical factions inside and outside Greece and their struggles (like Bactria, YueZhi, Seleucids) which e.g. Rome Total War just abstracted away
* laws/governmental systems (e.g., two consul setup vs. monarchy)
* playing tall
* customization of your nation through tech and military traditions
* pops mechanics (social classes, identities, your citizen's output drops when you draft them into the army)
* managing the elite: e.g., building relationships with foreign families or trying to accomodate your local oligarchs lest they start a civil war
* natural constraints on fast expansion like cultural and religious diversity (just because you conquered them doesn't mean they'll fight for you), your elites becoming harder to manage
What I don't like:
* battle AI: I started as tiny Thebes (19 pops, one landlocked territory, supposedly the hardest difficulty) and invaded the Italien Peninsula around 130 years later (ca 2600 pops), crushing Rome in two consecutive wars using mercenaries (they pushed one of the most powerful people in my league to start a civil war, only his sudden death from illness saved me, so I felt threatened and went berserk mode). Their forces were far superior, but they just rushed them into mine one by one even though the game indicates that they would lose the fight (there are symbols that indicate your chance of success). I wouldn't have had a chance against human players, but against AI that is too dumb to invade islands, scatters their troops all over the place and heads into battles it is guaranteed to lose ... well. All you have to do is to concentrate your forces at decisive moments. Then again, historically many great powers failed to do so (think of how Napoleon crushed superior forces by "simply" engaging them separately instead of all at once). Still, feels a bit lame to win because the AI constantly blunders.
All that being said: Highly recommended. Get the Invictus mod though as it greatly enhances the experience.
