Immortal: Unchained is the latest addition to the genre of ultra-hardcore action RPGs. Take the role of a living weapon, unleashed to stop the source of a cataclysmic event threatening to end all worlds. Discover the secrets of these worlds, master the unique but lethal gun combat, and defeat legendary bosses. Being an ultimate weapon, you have been locked up for millennia by those who fear your potential. It will require many harsh lessons to unlock this potential in an unforgiving universe full of murderous foes. On your journey, expect no mercy and no assistance: Those that aren’t trying to kill you, will instead try to use you to further their own agenda. Trust no one.

I feel like a lot of people didn't give this game enough of a fair shot when it was released in 2018. Playing this today I can say I genuinely enjoyed my time with this game even though it was not a perfect experience. It's a bit rough around the edges, but I loved the core gameplay loop so much it carried me through the game. This game was instantly improved for me by two options:
1. Remaping the controls (using Steam-input) to something akin to Remant: From the Ashes
2. Enabling Auto-aim in the options menu. The "raw" aiming felt very floaty no matter how much tweaking I did. With Auto-aim enabled, the challenge comes from dealing with the enemies and their response to your actions, not fighting with the right thumbstick to place the crosshair where you want it. The action feels very reminiscent of Metroid Prime this way.
The game is obviously very challenging and "souls-like", but in particular it has very sharp difficulty spike once you enter the second area. This is where I believe most people drop out of the game. If you can stick with it, get better loot/upgrades, advance your skill in the game, I believe the game is certainly worth experiencing.

it was an interesting creative souls-like action with nice mood until poor level design met guns, and the game became absurdly difficult. at some point i said ♥♥♥♥ it, and never returned.
still think you have to give it a chance, though

Shotgun with Power Shot is OP, you can one shot with a crit build and Sniper when hitting weakspots, guns have elements but Acid seems useless compared to Fire and Frost slows enemies down which is easy mode. I use 2 power shot shotguns(1 frost 1 normal) and 2 assault rifles(1 fire 1 acid)
Game runs smooth and fast. Feels modern. I only have a 2080ti. The difficulty spike from the first 2 areas is massive, but manageable. If you overcome the forest, the rest of the game is a cakewalk. Dont fight the optional boss in the river right away. You wont have enough ammo to kill him. Just use one of the exits or ladders to leave. Trust.
Cons: Weapons drops are rare, and you mostly get melee weapons that you will never use. Higher rarity weapons DO NOT give rare crafting materials when dismantled to upgrade weapons so you better pick what you like and stick with it. No room for experimenting.

It's an interesting game, souls-like with a gun twist, I think it's worth a shot if you can find on sale. Don't know what more to say, except I enjoyed it, I think most fans of the dark souls series would as well.

If you want a soulslike with guns, this is it. There is no other option.
The core experience is quite solid.
Good variety of environments, beautiful architecture. Enemy design is great (but encounter design, at times, is the worst you will ever experience. Not just in the genre. In general.).
There are bugs:
- in several specific places, I fell through textures. Doesn't happen very often, but still does.
- the opening cutscene, shows an empty space where your character would be.
Another big issue, is the balance between your weapon choices. Some weapon types do their job, and some simply do not.
To get an enjoyable first impression, start as Marksman. Fun, fluid, fast-paced gameplay. Everything else, by comparison, is hard mode. Some weapons feel like fighting with a sword hilt.
A smaller issue, but still noticeable, is protagonist's identity. While you get to pick appearance and name, your character's presence in the plot has fixed gender, backstory, and even name(?).
Despite all this, I recommend it. Enter with low expectations, choose starting class wisely, and you will enjoy the game.
