“This is a story about how I learned to skate. It was hard…”
How I learned to Skate is a desperately difficult ice-skating challenge about a boy learning to skate for the first time, following an increasingly burdensome path, chasing after the girl he could never have.
Gameplay
Control individual legs and body tilt to move the ice-skater with a mouse or a controller. It’s simple.
- Raise a leg
- Choose a direction
- Release the leg
- Tilt the body to turn
Additional info
This game is all about learning and mastering a new unique mechanic.
- A challenge with checkpoints.
- Inspired by a Warcraft 3 mod that I love, Polar Escape 5
- Merged together with instantaneous mouse controls from Getting Over It
- Takes roughly 12 hours to complete, depending on how fast you learn. Roughly 3 hours for the demo.

The controls are unique but feel good after some getting used to, and the sensation of gliding around on the ice is great. Fantastic visuals and sound too.
The game is extremely punishing tho. First chapter is easy enough, but right after that is a huge difficulty spike where the checkpoints start being placed insanely far apart. And after that you get to a section where you gotta control 2 skaters at once and the game even starts pushing you back to the PREVIOUS checkpoint if you fall. I like the unique controls of games like these but I don't enjoy loosing progress so I have a hard time recommending this game, but it's unique enough to still warrant a thumbs up.

Very nice little game about ice skating. I never realised how hard it was until I tried. The graphics are very pleasant and stylistic. Hearkens back to polar escape WC3 mod, but makes it a meaty mechanical challenge on top.
If you've played other precision platformer games like pogostuck, jump king or getting over it you'll surely like this one too.

Quick Score: 4/5
Notes: Absolutely brutal awkward control sim. The dev is currently working on implementing a practice mode and possibly some other tweaks, and once those are implemented the game will probably be a 5/5 in my book, but until then I will comment on the current state of the game.
Game looks great, and overall the concept of the game is great, however difficulty scaling and checkpoint placement can be infuriating for your first playthrough. A couple checkpoints are insane difficulty spikes paired with being incredibly long.
My first playthrough of the game took 8 hours and 30 minutes with 1212 falls. Which doesn't sound bad, however this is much better than average. Assuming you are able to stick through the game without ragequitting, the store page is about accurate in estimating 12 hours for a first playthrough.
Personally I played through the game with controller and I found it easier. However the dev mainly played with mouse and once you master the mouse it seems to be just as good if not better than controller. Just depends on what you are more comfortable with, they each have their pros and cons.
I would only recommend this game if you are prepared for an extreme challenge and don't mind getting stuck at a single checkpoint for several hours.
If you do end up getting stuck, I managed to record a pretty good speedrun of the game you can use as reference. Can be found in the guide section in the community hub for this game.

ALT+F4:ing in frustration only to start the game again in three seconds makes me wonder if I have an addiction. Every time I start to feel like I am the best skater in the world, the game slaps my face with a sledgehammer.
5/5 git gud

While the challenge is the main focus, I have to give some appreciation towards the artistic direction of this game. It looks really pretty and there is a lot of visual variety between sections. The birds eye view you see the game through is really unique and it is used in very clever ways, sometimes adding to the challenge.
Great game if you don't mind the brutal difficulty, my first completion was in 11:33:52, with 2,616 falls!

Is good, although that it's good and why should be obvious based on the screenshots and trailers. Shame they removed the demo though.
That said, as much as I appreciate a difficult game, there are limits. Frustration is fine, exhaustion is not. This game feels exhausting to play once they start knocking you back checkpoints upon failure. When it comes to timing puzzles you're basically guaranteed to fail it a few times before getting it. Knocking the player back an extra checkpoint for that when there are three timing puzzles in a row means I have to replay that previous level nine times through no fault of my own before I can even attempt the technical challenge.
