Heroine’s Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok
Explore the rich world of Nordic mythology! Egther, last of the Frost Giants, has sworn to turn all the world to ice. A young heroine is called to fight him, but first she must survive the harsh environment, battle hostile trolls, and deal with many creatures and characters from the classic myths.
Heroine’s Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way. Each class has her own solution to the numerous obstacles, where the warrior is the most straightforward to play, the sorceress focuses on smart solutions and finding the right spell for the situation, and the rogue cheats her way through life without getting caught.
The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, there are plenty of options for further replayability. The game has been voted voted 69th All-Time Best Computer RPG by RpgCodex. It is available completely for free, or as we like to call it, priceless.

To put it mildly, it's insane this game is free. Often it is lamented online, 'What games are out there like the QfG series.'
And the cold voice of the internet says, 'None.'
Except this one.
Heroine's Quest could easily be a spin off from the Quest for Glory games, but manages still to be its own thing. Beautiful artwork, likeable characters, multiple solutions to different problems. I can't recommend it enough.

This free game is in fact a fully realised point'n'click adventure which I think rivals even the best commercial entries in the genre. It is a wondrous passion project and beautiful homage to Sierra's classic Quest for Glory series.
The production values are what you'd expect from a professional release in every conceivable way. Players are treated to glorious 2D art, fully voiced charcaters with commendable performances, beautifully orchestrated score and superb writing, world building and overall game design.
And it's what I'd call a 'full-length' adventure. So many point'n'clicks nowadays (especially free ones) are quite short, but Heroine's Quest took me 25 hours which provides ample opportunity to feel deeply immersed in its world. And of course there's 2 more character classes should I decide to play through again sometime down the track.
I'm a point'n'click enthusiast from way back and the QfG series, particularly 1 & 4, was my very favourite. Heroine's Quest crafts an original story drawing on Norse mythology and takes all its design cues from the very best of QfG1 & 4, and I couldn't be more thrilled with the result. I dare to say that it's just as good as both of these classic games of the genre.

I'm really blown away by this game. As an old-time fan of the Quest for Glory series, I try out games when someone aspires to get into the footsteps of the classic series. And this game absolutely delivers on the promise. Playing it just makes you feel at home when you think of the old games, and I think if it had been the 90s and someone gave me the game, I would not have doubted it to be canon. There's a sheer endless amount of details, starting with many side quests and countless animations for special cases. The RPG system makes sense, even though it feels like at some points some skills could have been developed a bit futher. There is an element of walking around a lot, which is made harder by the fact that warmth and sustenance is not very common at the beginning, but it gets better. There's a love for detail and for quirky, well-written characters and dialogues. I quite enjoyed the ways some characters dialogues were construed, the mage who goes on and on repeating the concepts he talks about, or the elves who all follow a different weird grammatical pattern. Even though I had to resort to the solution provided by the developer quite often, I enjoyed every bit of the game and am happy that I played it. Thank you for making a game that fits right in with the QfG series!

Astounding level of quality and care for a freeware title.
Plays, looks and sounds like the old King's Quest games for the Commodore 64.
Most definitely grab this if you like point-n-click adventures.
If you can purchase the DLC to support the Devs, this group seems like it's deserving.

If you grew up playing the Sierra games, and especially Quest for Glory you should stop reading this review and go download and play this masterpiece right now. Seriously, it's insane that this game is even free.
There's so much love and care that went into this. It's basically Quest for Glory 6. The art style, the nostalgic feel, the combat, the three different classes, a hidden honor stat... it's all there.
Extremely addicting and wonderfully crafted, Heroine's Quest is a fantastic game that I wish and pray gets many sequels one day. There are also so many nods and easter eggs to other Sierra games; you will find or see something new every playthrough.
I beat the game as Warrior, Sorceress and Rogue; then proceeded to have 3 more separate playthroughs just to see even more this game has to offer and check some stuff I missed out on (and get extra achievements).
Absolutely fantastic game. Cannot recommend this enough!

I really like this game. For one, I think it's worth at least 15 dollars, and I didn't even realize it was free until recently. This game literally has most of the mechanics I would put into my own adventure game. So again, great game!

Let's start off by saying that I've paid ACTUAL MONEY for games with less personality and love clearly poured into them. The devs for HQ truly seem to have put their whole hearts and souls into this wonderful adventure game. As with any game in the genre, it has its obtuse puzzles and I definitely spent quite a lot of time saying "What the heck am I even doing here?" and checking the walkthrough published by the devs themselves. Overall, I fully enjoyed my time in this version of Midgard and in time, I fully intend to play through the game as the other 2 classes just to see some of the things I may have missed as the Rogue.
(Hint, don't pick the Rogue on your first game, that was a terrible idea XD)
