A nice idea in 2016, a mediocre game in 2019, a failure in 2021…
This is the story of heroes&generals. The game is losing more and more players each day but because all the memories this game has we can’t really let it go, i hope things get better with the new publisher.

Review from Steam

This game is only recommended on the conditions that new players are desperate enough for a WW2 battlefield like experience and have no alternative games available. H&G is fundamentally very enjoyable and sets a higher standard for free first person shooters, but its flaws becomes so apparent it causes extreme nausea and gamer genetic mutation to grow the thickest and most unruly of neckbeards.
The issues are as follows:
☣︎Old maps: At this time, the devs have not created any new maps for almost a decade. At most they have added recently some weathering conditions with some post processing VFX, but you will invest a lot of time playing about 5 maps and 2 game modes.
☣︎High ping / lag: Server lags will test your fortitude to keep the game running, as you absolutely will experience rubberbanding, but how often can vary from every few games to a whole week.
☣︎Pay2Win: You can unlock everything without having to buy in-game credits, but it will take sleepless nights and months to years ( not exaggerating ) to be able to play against veterans who also sold their souls to save their wallets. There are no overpowered paid weapons, but in order to increase your chances of winning matches with the right resources such as tanks, fighter planes, sniper classes, spawn trucks etc, you must have your generals purchase them, and many hardcore vets do with pay2win credits.
☣︎Hackers: Many players including vets will blindly shut down any type of hackusations because "Get-Gud" culture. Despite obvious and recorded evidence of hacks, and YT videos of hackers promoting premium purchase sites with comments glorifying their troll achievements, calling out hacks is taboo.
☣︎Community: The main menu chat will be a reflection of what you'd find on 4chan with conversations ranging from conspiracy theories, alpha-beta male discussions, and other topics that a mentally unstable teenager would find interesting. The in-game chat will largely contain people blaming each other for not winning the match, even if a round was doomed to fail due to the pay2win system briefly mentioned earlier. Overall there are some great players and good people that play this game, but they will be overshadowed by the cancerous community.
☣︎The grind / time investment: Even if you purchase credits to unlock things faster, you will be on the low end of the totem pole with poor equipment for a good while before the game starts to get more fun and less miserable. The game has three factions with the same classes on each side, and with my whopping 1200 hrs, I have unlocked about 90% of one faction, 60% on another, and 0% with the last.
☣︎Dying playerbase: Because of many of the issues mentioned above, the game has been on a slow but steady decline of players. H&G gives the players the ability to choose their play style, weather that be infantry, tank, plane fighter etc, but you will load into a game faster if you choose infantry first and foremost. The community meta largely discriminates against plane players because they don't know how to fly and values infantry more, so despite the game being able to provide assault vehicles, you will have to wait much longer to play with them.
So if you've read this far, you might be wondering why would I recommend it still after all the complaints and evidence to steer clear of this game. I'd like to say it's a form of Stockholm syndrome, but also the game for all its faults can be really enjoyable if you're patient enough. It also has some RTS components that I haven't seen any other FPS game include. If anything, I'd recommend this game for anyone that wants to explore ideas to expand the FPS genre.
TLDR: If you're a broke nihilist or FPS junkie, sure, but otherwise get a job at Walmart and save up to get HLL or Squad instead.

Don't spend money, only play if you have no life.

Great game although my previous ranks and achievements were deleted and I have to start all over again. The map revisions created more choke points and limited movement. As infantry, you are at an extreme disadvantage getting to objectives and certainly not much concealment is afforded crossing large areas. Personally, I preferred the old maps (and there were more of them) which allowed a "thinking" person to play tactfully. I'm over 60 years old and a retired veteran who enjoys war mode gaming.
