HUUUUGE fan of GUNBIRD, don't let my on record playtime fool you.
Switched over from emulating the PAL version of GUNBIRD Special Edition on PS2 in 60hz mode for the achievements + to support the devs bc I like it *that* much, and that's a high bar coming from someone like me who is already a (self-proclaimed) fairly big fan of STGs, and niche ones at that. Knowing this is a *very* good port going into it helps too though, lol
An enjoyable soundtrack, gorgeous backgrounds and spritework, and an addicting learning curve to charge shot optimization (you stop firing and they take literal seconds to charge, can you hold out long enough to pull it off? When should you even charge? How long do you wait to release it once it's ready?), along with a visually striking cast keep GUNBIRD prominently at the front of my mind when I'm itching for a shoot em up.
This port also has a very nice and clean widescreen UI, which I appreciate. Would like to get a vertical monitor setup some day, but until then I'm a big fan of the addition, especially the extra overlay for your keybinds which I haven't seen before, because I *will* forget them during extended breaks from the game, lol
tldr: excellent shmup and one of my favs, excellent port for its asking price (but I was lucky enough to receive my copy as a gift). Definitely consider picking it up even if it isn't on sale (currently -66% at the time of writing)
edit: no final sale </3, I can't vouch for it there but at least this port is still available on Switch for the time being(?), but personally I'll most likely stick to just recommending emulating GUNBIRD Special Edition, at least for my PC homies

Gunbird, developed by Zerodiv and City Connection and published by City Connection, is a faithful revival of Psikyo’s mid-1990s arcade classic—a vertical scrolling shoot ’em up that embodies everything that made the genre a staple of arcade gaming. It is a vibrant, fast-paced, and deceptively challenging experience that thrives on reflexes, pattern recognition, and the pursuit of high scores. The Steam version of Gunbird preserves its original heart while enhancing accessibility for modern players, allowing a new generation to experience the sharp design, quirky humor, and relentless action that defined Psikyo’s approach to shooters. Though it’s decades old in origin, the game retains a freshness that speaks to the timeless appeal of tight gameplay and clear design philosophy.
Set in a fantastical steampunk world, Gunbird takes a whimsical approach to the typical shoot ’em up formula. Instead of military jets or sci-fi starships, players choose from a cast of eccentric characters, each with distinct personalities and attack patterns. Marion, a young witch flying on a broomstick, shares the stage with a fortune teller, a valiant knight, and other colorful heroes, all of whom are seeking pieces of a magical mirror that grants wishes. This simple narrative premise, punctuated by lighthearted dialogue and comic interludes, adds charm and humor without ever getting in the way of gameplay. It’s a refreshing departure from the cold or militaristic tone that often dominates the genre, making Gunbird feel both approachable and delightfully weird.
Gameplay is the star of the show. Like all great vertical shooters, Gunbird demands precision and split-second decision-making. Enemies attack in increasingly complex patterns, bosses unleash elaborate bullet spreads, and the screen fills with projectiles that test even seasoned players. Each character’s weapon system has its own rhythm and strategy—some rely on rapid-fire attacks, others on slower but more powerful blasts. Players collect power-ups to enhance their firepower and bombs to clear the screen in moments of desperation, but both resources are limited, forcing thoughtful use. What sets Gunbird apart from its contemporaries is the balance between accessibility and challenge. Beginners can enjoy the lower difficulties to learn enemy patterns and enjoy the spectacle, while experts can push into higher settings that require memorization, flawless movement, and nerves of steel.
The level design reflects Psikyo’s classic structure—short, intense stages that escalate quickly, each culminating in an elaborate boss encounter. The bosses are one of the game’s defining strengths, each one a mechanical marvel that evolves across multiple attack phases, with increasingly dense bullet patterns that border on bullet hell territory. The satisfaction of learning these patterns and eventually surviving them is immense, especially as the game encourages replayability through randomized stage order and multiple endings based on the character selected. This structure keeps each run feeling fresh while rewarding mastery over time. The Steam version preserves this arcade authenticity while providing modern conveniences such as save states, screen rotation (TATE mode for vertical monitors), and customizable controls.
Visually, Gunbird holds up remarkably well thanks to its crisp, hand-drawn pixel art and vibrant use of color. Each stage bursts with personality, from bustling airships and floating castles to underwater citadels. The animation is fluid and expressive, giving even the smallest enemy ships a sense of character. The whimsical steampunk aesthetic, paired with bright explosions and over-the-top effects, creates a visual identity that’s distinct and instantly recognizable. The soundtrack complements the action with energetic, catchy tunes that heighten the sense of urgency and excitement. Every chime, explosion, and laser shot carries that nostalgic arcade punch that defined the era.
Technically, the Steam port runs smoothly and remains faithful to the original arcade experience. Performance is stable even on modest hardware, and the input response feels tight—an essential feature for a game that relies on split-second precision. The inclusion of global leaderboards helps capture the competitive spirit of the arcade scene, encouraging players to refine their skills and chase higher scores. However, the port does not offer extensive extras or bonus materials, and its presentation remains minimal, reflecting its focus on authenticity rather than modern enhancements. Purists will appreciate this approach, though some players may wish for remastered visuals or additional content.
Gunbird’s greatest strength lies in its ability to capture the essence of arcade gaming—easy to learn, hard to master, and endlessly replayable. Its short, punchy campaign encourages repeated runs, with each attempt yielding a better understanding of enemy formations and attack patterns. The multiple characters and unique endings add replay value, giving players a reason to experiment beyond simply achieving high scores. Yet it also acknowledges its niche nature; those seeking narrative complexity, lengthy progression systems, or modern presentation may find it limited. It’s a pure, skill-based experience designed for players who find satisfaction in gradual mastery rather than expansion.
Ultimately, Gunbird stands as a reminder of why the shoot ’em up genre endures. Its fast-paced gameplay, charming personality, and rewarding difficulty curve make it a standout even decades after its original release. The blend of whimsical fantasy, precise mechanics, and nostalgic visuals creates an experience that feels both familiar and timeless. City Connection’s modern version preserves the essence of what made Psikyo’s work special—tight design, expressive art, and an addictive challenge loop that pulls players back for one more run. It’s not a reinvention of the genre, but it doesn’t need to be. Gunbird remains what it always was: a bright, demanding, and endlessly replayable celebration of arcade action at its finest.

Very nice and simple port. It respects sound, graphics and mechanics of the original game. My initial concern was the input lag, but I'm glad to say it has absolutely none that I can notice, at least. Nice price too.

Game gave me existential crisis.
Apparently my skill in shmup is just like that of a monke.
Dev thinks i'm just a monke.
I'm having a hard time sleeping because of this.
