Gone Home

First off, I really enjoyed the story told by this game, even though some parts of it weren't fully developed or a bit too subtle to pick up at first. I will go into this a little bit more thoroughly later on but i'd rather not spoil the story for anyone who'd rather be surprised.
I bought his game on sale, expecting it to be a dark story with mystery elements and while some of this is hinted at, it's simply background story that is added for atmosphere but doesnt really go anywhere. unless i've missed something, but i am fairly sure i found all hints/clues. so, if you're considering buying this for a creepy story, don't. This is not what this game is. It rather tells the story of a family as you are trying to figure out why no one is greeting you after coming home from a trip through Europe.
Gone Home is a very straight forward, short interactive story, rather than a full game. controls are limited and as the player, you won't really have any way to influence the story. for some, this might be reason enough to not play this, which is understandable. if this isn't your cup of tea, move along, find a different game to play. whatever floats your boat.
so let's get into the story. we will be talking heavy heavy spoilers here.
Gone Home, set in June 1995, tells the story of Katie who is getting home from a trip to Europe to find her new family home abandoned. There is a note on the door from her sister Sam telling her she's left and to not look for her or tell their parents/anyone where she's gone off to. So now Katie has to find out where her family is. By walking through the house and picking up clues, we find out that their somewhat Christian/religious parents are having some marriage troubles. While the dad is seemingly trying to find his footing as a science fiction author fixated on JFK's assassination, the mum is a forest conservationist who has to supervise a huge project. Through letters, we find out the mum is feeling somewhat distant from her husband and eventually, she even goes on a date (unclear if it's really a date) with her new coworker. Ultimately, we found out that the parents have left on a marriage counseling retreat, leaving behind their currently-grounded daughter Sam.
Speaking of Sam, let's get into her story. She's a young girl facing some of the typical teen angst problems of being the new girl at school until she meets Lonnie, a somewhat punk feminist girl she instantly becomes friends with. We get glimpses into a growing friendship that slowly develops into more than that. The two of them fall in love and Sam comes out to her parents as gay but they brush it off as merely a phase. Sam is heartbroken by her parents' reaction. As if that wasn't hard enough, she also knows her relationship with Lonnie can't last - since Lonnie has decided to join the army. After she leaves for training, Sam is desperate and when Lonnie calls, telling her she wants to be with her, she up and leaves to be with her.
So- this is why no one's home. I personally really enjoyed the teenage angst and the building coming-out -story. Finding out who she is - with all the conflicting feelings that come with it, including her parents' disapproval - unfolds beautifully and bittersweetly in this narrative.
