Fates of Ort
Fates of Ort is a retro inspired fantasy RPG with a focus on strategic action and a story driven by your decisions. It is a tale of sacrifice and difficult choices, in a world under threat of annihilation by the avaricious force of Consumption magic.
Magic is powerful, but it is not free. Every spell you cast requires a little bit of your life energy to spark it. Cast enough spells and you will extinguish your very soul. This means you need to be strategic when fighting, balancing the cost of magic with the risk of taking damage from your enemies.
How each spell manifests in the world depends on what divine power you choose to combine it with. For example, the Evoke Force spell will cause the ground to erupt with a series of sharp ice crystals, summon a thunderous lightning strike, or barrage the ground with a meteor shower – all depending on what the spell is combined with.
Use the magic spells at your disposal to defeat the demons spilling out from the underworld. In Ort, time is frozen whenever you stand still. This means you have the opportunity to plan your attacks and be strategic.
Like any RPG, you will be slaying enemies to collect loot and experience. The items you pick up will improve your magical abilities, though some come with curses… As you level up, you will learn additional magic spells to use against your enemies.
Ort is varied and expansive, an open world for you to explore. Choose the order of the quests you pursue, or just explore to meet new characters. The final battle is available whenever you choose, but… Are you strong enough?
Play as a novice mage, forced to take on the responsibility of saving the world and those that are important to you. Quests can be completed to gain access to new areas, save and unlock allies, gain items and powers, and more. Replays are encouraged because small decisions can have permanent and significant consequences, leading to different game outcomes.
- Learn and use 12 magic spells, and combine them with the three elements for different effects
- Time stops when you stand still – take advantage of this to plan your attacks
- Use your life energy to weave spells – be strategic in your fighting
- Explore various biomes around the world of Ort and meet a diverse set of characters
- Atmospheric soundtrack composed by Chris Gray
- Pursue truly optional quest lines, and make difficult choices between which characters to save
- Save the world, or rule it as a force of evil

An amazing and charming game. I just beat it for the first time and I'm actually invested enough to go back and trying to get all the side quests done. I didn't do that with Ghost of Tsushima. I didn't do that with Spiritfarer. And those games are designed to be incredibly emotional.
I love games that sets up all the materials for you, the gamer, to choose your own level of investment. While most modern games are "cinematic experiences", this game lets you choose the pacing. It really made me feel like a kid again in how much these characters mean to me.
This is absolutely worth every penny. I would absolutely buy a sequel.

It's a fun RPG where time moves only when you move, which makes combat a matter of positioning yourself properly and dodging projectiles. Casting spells costs health instead of any kind of mana points, which nicely ties in with the in-game lore. The final encounter can be approached relatively early in the game, but you are encouraged to explore the world, complete optional quests and become stronger for it. There is a nice variety of enemies, environments and characters, as well as plenty of decisions which pay off later in the game. Completing certain quests prevents you from finishing others, but this never comes as a surprise since the quest text always hints at this. My only complaint is that several times I experienced graphical glitches when I loaded a save, but they disappeared upon entering and exiting a building. Also, some spells and enchantments are absurdly powerful while there are others that I haven't used even once.
Overall, a very well made game that gets tedious if you try to 100% it, but feels great for a casual playthrough.

Entertaining game made with great love clearly. I compare this to the wonderful Eschalon games but this one is better. The mechanics this game has kept the going fresh for me well until end credits rolled for my quite incomplete walktrough.
I have almost nothing but praise for this. Style will of course not be of liking to many so that is the most obvious thing to look for. Don't listen to me if isometric, you-go-we-go kind of turn based adventuring is not to your liking. But if you have played your old school rpg games then this one is one of the better ones i have played in a long time.
Some cons though: While the game doesn't have simple fetch quests and it has a internal hinting system for quests things can still get pretty complex. It is worth writing down special locations that are not in the journal.
Early game is learning and survival and mid-game is about unlocking new areas but the end game... wow what a mess. You are now in end-game basically putting together the hot mess of a adventure you have had and since many quests have overlapping solutions that lock others out you are sometimes just one quest or location away from almost soft locking yourself. Almost, in reality it is usually that one thing you need to take a closer look in your journal. Or just go for the end finale. Which is what i did when i just could not quite figure out the last quests i had. At least i managed to save all the main characters that aid you in your adventure.

An action rpg where time stops when you aren't doing anything. I thought it was a relatively unique and interesting concept and I was pleasantly surprised how well it was implemented.
While your character gets stronger as it levels up, your maximum hp doesn't increase and spells can have an increasing demand of it as you cast the same spells. So if you decide to play the way I did, the game becomes an hp management as you try to cast the right variety of spells (some of which combo very well into each others) as you explore the land and complete questlines in hope of finding the next checkpoint. It was amazing.
The game could have used more enemy variety and different bosses. I became so powerful that I wished something would gladly tank my barrage of spell. I did like the rival dynamic with the main villain, but a lot of it seemed to wane away as the dialogue never made much sense nor did the fights ever evolve as my winning streak increased.

"Fates of Ort" is a labor of love, offering fresh mechanics that are both simple to understand and deeply engaging. Its charming art style adds to the fun, creating an RPG experience unlike any other. With hours of engaging game-play, I would recommend it for anyone seeking a unique and refreshing take on the genera.

This game surprised me on a whole other level. I saw the game a couple of times before in some bundles and I though it looked interesting, but I didn't know if I would like it. One day, I get it in a bundle and decided to try it out when waiting for the release of another game that was releasing in a couple of weeks, and I loved the game. I would describe this game as an open world RPG with magic at the center of the gameplay and a tactical style of fighting, since the spells you cast cost your HP and time moves only when you move. The fact that spells uses your HP made each fight more enjoyable, especially when I didn't reach a fast travel point in a while. But I have to say the game can be easily cheesed depending on the choices you make, for example having the sleep spell and placing the explosion spell multiple times near the sleeping enemy leads to an easy win. The other thing I really liked is how your choices affect the game. Some quest will be locked out depending on what choices you made during the game, in fact, I literally couldn't reach one area of the game because I used a couple of items earlier that made accessing the area impossible. Sure I was bummed out a little but it was near the end of the game and was a rather small zone for a couple of side quests. But yeah, if this game looks interesting to you, I have to recommend it, it is definitely worth it and it's a shame there isn't much attention to this game.

Fates of Ort is a very real RPG game. I must say I didn't feel this good playing an RPG game in a long time.
Don't get this wrong, this game is no Witcher, and no Cyberpunk, it's also no Kingdom Come Deliverance.
But it has an interesting story to tell, set in a unique universe. With nice sidequests, and a lot of decisions that might or might not matter in the end (I won't spoil!).
The combat system is also interesting (albeit not without its issues), which makes up for a time well spent.
