Thoroughly okay
So, this is a game in the vein of Megaman and some elements from Kirby. The controls are a bit floaty, the enemies are a bit spongy, but it's all in the acceptable range. After each mission, you'll receive a quest item and there's somewhere an NPC on the map you have to tediously find and give it to them for a small actual reward.
Speaking of NPCs, clearly most of the love went into designing NPCs. Enemies are mostly a handful of types with colorswaps, but NPCs with nice Pixel Art and pointless dialogue exist plenty. The actualy levels often seem like an afterthought with very few assets. The level design isn't great, but it's servicable. For faster movement, higher jumps or the ability to slide you have to switch between a couple of characters on the fly - which they might have very well just put into one character. And that's generally the feel of the game, it feels like the games wanted to rather make a stardewvalley-villagers-interaction meets hidden-object, but they were forced to make a platformer.
So, all in all Fallen Leaf is an okay game. but nothing more. If this kind of game is your thing, get the Megaman Legacy collection and download the MegaMan Maker. And after that get the second Megaman Legacy Collection. And if you're then still yearning for more, come back, get Fallen Leaf. It's entertaining, but not amazing.

This game takes everything that you're nostalgic about the NES, throws away some of the old limitations, and runs wild with the rest!
The first limitation they clearly did away with was the size limit. NES games had to be fit onto small cartridges. Even with some of the later mappers, NES games were comparatively small. Largest licensed NES game (Kirby's Adventure) was barely 6 megabits in size. Or to put it another way, 3/4th of a megabyte!
Due to this limitation, you'd see certain tiles reused over and over again. Fallen Leaf easily has a 100 times or more the tiles you would ever find on an NES game. Hundreds of enemies, items, and characters, text lines, songs, sound effects, levels, secrets etc, etc. The soundtrack is like 5 hours long! There's just so much of everything. You'd never be able to fit it all on a real NES cartridge. I love this because it feels like a game from an alternate world where technology moved much slower. Imagine if the NES stuck around for 20 more years, but the cartridges got bigger. You'd end up with a game like Fallen Leaf.
They also they pushed past the number of colors on the screen at once. The NES was pretty limited in this regard. Fallen Leaf keeps much of the feel of the NES palette, while vastly increasing the on screen colors. Yet despite doing this, the game somehow still feels and looks exactly like an NES game. I think this is because they kept the limit on the number of colors per sprite and tile, which seems to be one of the defining limitations of the NES.
I'm also really enjoying the world, story, and characters. I've laughed out loud a number of times now. The story, while simple, is genuinley entertaining. I get excited when running into certain characters again because they're so funny! In particular, that naked wizard dude Willow is hilarious! How many people did this guy seal up in boxes already? :-D
If I had to sum Fallen Leaf up in one sentence, I'd say: It's everything you'd dream as a kid that a NES game could be. Bravo guys! Thank you for this! I'm so glad some people out there are still making these games.
I'll update more after I finish the game.
Edit: Finished the game! You can tell a lot of love went into this. I was especially surprised and happy with how the story turned out. It twisted in ways I wasn't expecting. Bravo guys! Can't wait to see what you cook up next!

Basically this is Megaman experience and various retro homages. Conquer fun and challenging 70+ stages with reliable companions who have unique talents. Nice price.

This is really good, its all the best parts of Mega Man, some Mario, Metroids, this game is a joy to play and a platforming treasure. Everything lines up-
-music is excellent
-graphics are warm and fuzzy
-story is fun and charming
-difficulty is still there, but not as punishing
This reminds me of like 1994

Amazing game. Anyone who likes 2D platformers will likely love it. It's got incredible art, tight and precise controls, lots of creative level design, and a HUGE cast of playable characters. It's also got a ton of levels too, much more than most similar games have, plus the characters are upgradeable and there are other quests you can undertake in towns and the like that will reward you with new sub-weapons, characters, and health upgrades. There's just so much in this game that it's hard to believe. Truly one of the greats.

Fallen Leaf is an excellent platformer with a ton of variety. It takes a lot of inspiration from Mega Man, mainly, but it also takes homage from Mario, Ducktales, Ninja Gaiden and a few other classics. There is something for everyone here, generally, if you happened to enjoy platformers from that era.
That isn't to say it's perfect, of course. There are little frustrations here and there.
The game tends to introduce new enemies and obstacles by throwing them into your face with very little time to react. I have almost always taken a hit from these situations that I didn't feel was my fault.
Another issue is that you get many characters and they are not generally balanced; Poor Leaf becomes obsolete very quickly once your options open up and later characters invalidate Pawla almost entirely. The game does a lot to ensure every character can get through every stage at least, so the balance issues don't harm the game. That said, I found myself mostly sticking to 2 or 3 characters out of ten.
Also, you only get one stage to use the final character in, which is unfortunate.
All in all, these little issues don't do anything to harm the game. It does well to accomodate whatever playstyle you enjoy, and it's well worth the purchase.

Shovel Knight's lost cousin is gorgeous!
It is a crime the fact so few people know this gem, everything is spot on! A perfect mix between classic Megaman and Super Mario Bros 3. Just check all the other posiive reviews to hear praise after praise, I will just complain about the few bad things IMO:
- It's a short game, wish it was 10 hours longer.
- Kind of an easy game to be true, we needed more stages like the last one.
I know those are petty complains, totally acceptable for a small indie game like this, more time and ressources to the devs and I am sure this would be on par with the great indies of our time.
