Fall Guys – From Charming Indie Hit to Epic Live-Service Event
Fall Guys was once the surprise hit of summer 2020 – a colorful, chaotic multiplayer title that won over countless players with its simple concept, fun gameplay, and high entertainment value. Whether alone or with friends, the clumsy race through obstacle courses was a guaranteed source of good vibes, laughter – and the occasional burst of frustration.
But since the takeover by Epic Games and its removal from the Steam store, quite a lot has changed. And not all of it for the better.
A Strong Core Concept Remains
The core gameplay is still fantastic: up to 60 players throw themselves into chaotic mini-games that land somewhere between Takeshi’s Castle and battle royale. Races, team games, skill tests – every round is unpredictable, and most defeats are at least a little funny. The “last one standing wins” idea works surprisingly well here, without the stress of other battle royale titles.
What still carries Fall Guys today is its charming style: colorful maps, squeaky costumes, quirky music, and a healthy dose of humor make the game a visual and acoustic delight – especially when playing with friends.
Epic Takeover: More Content, Less Soul?
Epic’s acquisition brought plenty of content: new seasons, fresh game modes, co-op events with major brands – all fine and good. But with the shift to the free-to-play model, the overall feel of the game became noticeably more monetized. The focus increasingly lies on battle passes, daily challenges, and a shop full of skins that are not exactly cheap.
Even more significant: the Steam version was removed from the store. New players can now only get the game through the Epic Games Store – which is a clear step backward for many who prefer managing their games through Steam, or who avoid Epic on principle. Those who bought Fall Guys on Steam before the Epic takeover can still play it, of course – but the bitter aftertaste remains.
Technically Solid, but Uneven in Gameplay
Fall Guys still runs reliably, and performance is decent even on weaker systems. But the gameplay quality varies: some newer mini-games are creative and well thought out, while others feel underdeveloped or come across as filler. Some rounds are simply frustrating because they are determined more by luck than by skill.
The matchmaking is not always ideal either – sometimes you get eliminated very quickly before the fun has really started. Especially for newcomers or solo players, that can feel discouraging fast.
Conclusion
Fall Guys is still a fun, colorful multiplayer title that shines most when played with friends. The core concept remains charming, and many rounds still manage to put a smile on your face. But the move toward the free-to-play model, the shop-focused design, and the removal from the Steam store have cost the game a fair bit of authenticity.
What once felt like a lovingly made indie title now feels more like just another live-service game with battle pass pressure. If you can live with that, you will still have plenty of fun. If you miss the original feeling, you may come away a little disappointed.
My Rating: 7/10
"Despite the colorful costumes and chaotic fun – some of its charm has been lost to commercialization."
