I'm only 30 minutes into this game and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it doesn't deserve even a third of the amount of hate that it gets. Let me break it down for you.
1. First we'll be shutting the Cuphead kids up. I have 329 hours in Cuphead, I have a Cuphead tattoo on my hand, and I've been top 5 in the world on multiple single boss Speedruns for Cuphead. So if you started reading this section and said to yourself "Well, he probably doesn't like Cuphead as much as me so he doesn't get it!". You're right, I don't like Cuphead as much as you, chances are I like it far more than you do. If you came to Enchanted Portals looking for Cuphead you shot yourself in the foot before launching the game. There will never be anything like Cuphead ever again, deal with it. Enjoy this game for what it uniquely has to offer.
2. Now for what I consider real gripes about the game. I'll agree with the people saying the controls/gameplay are a little bit clunky. But the game isn't unplayable by any stretch of the imagination. Do I wish the controls were a tiny bit more response? Yes I do. Does this make the game awful? No, it doesn't.
3. The art is FANTASTIC. It's fun, silly, sometimes cozy, and very fun to look at. I've found myself on multiple occasions already purposely refraining from ending the level just to look at the art move around.
4. The sound is what my biggest issue with the game it. I like some of the tracks, but it gets repetitive very quickly. That being said I've also yet to finish the full game so maybe they'll sneak some ear-worms in there at some point.
5. Finally let's talk about the difficulty. I've fought the first two bosses so far. Difficult? Yes. Solely from a standpoint of bullet-hell mechanics. There is a LOT of stuff to pay attention to on the screen and dodging everything can be a bit overwhelming. Some point in the first two bosses reminding be a lot of Chef Saltbaker level of on screen hitboxes. But if you came into a game with bullet hell mechanics like Cuphead and get upset about that, maybe this type of game isn't for you.
I can definitely recommend this game with a few caveats. Firstly, if you're the type who really loves weaving characters in-between abilities and like to manage a LOT of son screen dangers in your mind, this is for you. It's also really great fun just to look at the art if that's your thing. If you don't like dying a lot, and have a big issue with replaying the same level multiple times just to get the timing down, this game is NOT for you, seriously. Finally, if you came from Cuphead, looking for another Cuphead, this game isn't for you, and no game will be. Play Cuphead.
My apologies for the long rant but I've put off buying this game for months now because I've heard nothing but terrible things, and all of it was complete over-exaggeration.
