Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.
Is this game a masterpiece? Probably not, but it is a fun rythm game combined with a roadtrip to hell during the zombie apocalypse.
Your Heavy Metal band of five, protected from becoming zombies by the power of Heavy Metal, travels through the USA and meets crazy survivors, all the way chased by hordes of zombies (and other enemies). Your teambus (a modified cadillac) is equipped with 2 guns firing at enemies behind you, and the guns are tied to your drums. Press the correct button on your controller at the right time to fire the left or right gun. Hitting chains of beats make your guns more powerful. Move your car up and down to aim. The pixel art style is great, even the animations for the monsters chasing you are done very well. The soundtrack is - of course - rather good (as long as you enjoy Metal).
Conclusion:
Rythm game in cool pixel art and with great Heavy Metal songs.

A rhythm game about killing zombies in the apocalypse with the power of metal! It has a fun story and the dialogue is even part of the background music which is pretty awesome. METAL!!!!!

I'd like to start this review off with a small yet somewhat important warning:
If you're a macOS user, the achievements for this game will not unlock on Steam. The developers have said on the Steam forums that they don't have plans to fix that on their roadmap. I do hope this will change because it is a bit weird that it has no problems with Windows but does with macOS but then, I'm not familiar with the technical aspects of Steam Achievements.
Game info:
This is a really enjoyable Guitar Hero styled game that is also combined with aspects of a Shoot 'Em Up. If you still have one of the Guitar Hero/Rockband guitar controllers that will work with your PC then you can use that to play this game. For veterans of this genre, I think that would be the best way to play this game but sadly, my own one doesn't work on my pc, however, a controller or just your good old reliable keyboard works fine as well. You even can play this game with the Guitar Hero drumkit, if you so wish.
Double Kick Heroes (DKH) has quite a few different options to play through, such as:
An arcade mode (where you DON'T watch the story) and
A story mode (where you DO watch the story)
Both of these have the exact same levels, just having story-based cutscenes or not is the only difference between those two.
DKH has some varying modes, where there are different songs that are already unlocked for you and another where you can create your own songs. It is also possible to play songs that other players have previously made.
Each of these modes, all have five difficulty options, varying from easy to extremely hard. So far, this is your typical "Guitar Hero," Stuff.
When it comes to the Shoot 'Em Up part, if you so choose, you can be offered help via the options menu, if that part isn't quite to your liking, which will enable it so that you don't have to steer through the game.
It is really nice to see that as an extra option, to help people out who are already having a hard enough time just trying to focus on the music aspect only.
Achievements Info:
The achievements for this game are, in my opinion, very hard. You do have a lot of easy ones you can unlock, even if you're terrible at this type of game and just want to play on easy but it has achievements for playing on the extremely hard difficulty and they still require you to hit a high percentage of the notes.
If you start directly on the highest difficulty, you'll also unlock them for the lower difficulties without having to replay them, which means that if this is your type of game you can complete it in under 4 hours.
Around 40% of the achievements will just unlock by playing through the story/arcade mode. For some, you have to replay a specific level (for example; the Black Hen's on lvl 2-1).
There is also an achievement for playing through all the songs in endless mode or daily run. There are +22 songs and takes just a little bit over an hour.
Pros & cons:
+ Fun to see a Guitar Hero like game on Steam, I miss these types of games, since they aren't as popular anymore.
+ It is nice that they added some variety with the Shoot 'Em Up part.
+- To achieve 100% in this game might be a real challenge for some of us, somewhat amateur "Musicians."

The hype for this game is not sustained...
The price is great but I would rahter play other more polished and addictive rythm games.
Can't quite put my finger on it, but it doesen't feel good to play (perhaps weak or bad feedback when hitting notes)
Story mode is a drag with overused rock references, feels like a 2005's game in a bad way... Passion without direction. Gameplay Sprites are good looking, story / dialog portraits look amateur, also dialog font is garbage.
Play only if you got stuck in puberty (it has to do with presentation and writing, not music itself) or have played most of other better rythm games and have to play every single one for some reason... like me :P
I would give it a neutral if it were an option, but is not a bad game overall and I would rather not to drag its score down for some nitpickings.

It's an insane variety of music. However, Double Kick Heroes is also one of the most challenging rhythm games I've ever played. The speed is tremendous which makes sense for the genres of music.
The most important thing you need to know about Double Kick Heroes is the crazy mash-up of mechanics. The main track is the kick drum and it's the only one that matters. If you miss too many notes then it's game over. The enemies will catch up to the car and you'll lose a life. You must alternate the guns to shoot enemies coming from the top and bottom of the screen. Gaining a streak will make the guns more powerful. However, if you miss too many notes the guns lock up and you can't shoot at all. It's a tricky situation to come back from if you lock up too many times you will fail the level.
The other two tracks, snare and cymbals, output more damage against the horde of enemies. But they're only activated on higher difficulty levels. At the level, I played at I only had snare notes to hit. They're not required to finish the level but they do help.
So you're managing the rhythm mechanics but that's not all you'll also need to move the car out of the way of attacks. On certain levels, you take control of the car and move it up and down. Luckily the game reduces the difficultly so you can focus. It's a neat mechanic and I like how they show you the attack is coming in the area where you see the notes. But it's not perfect. It kinda shows you the direction you need to move the car but not if you have it in the right place. It's challenging to keep hitting the notes and keep track of the car's position. Shifting your brain between the two can break it.
Overall, Double Kick Heroes is a great game and another solid addition to my rhythm game collection. I enjoyed all the music and destroying the hellish demons along the way. Shooting enemies from a car using a drum kit is such a novel idea it's difficult not to love it.

It has rhythm and zombies and metal.
While I suck at rhythm games, this one isn't impossible.
I like the soundtrack well enough and the nods to real world metal stars is a nice touch.
Definitely worth a look if you are into metal AND rhythm games.
