I played the game when it was popular and I'm happy to be playing it now. It's a game worth coming back to after ten years. I'm happy to report that the bots in this game are competently designed and will provide endless hours of entertainment, no matter how forgotten this game becomes.

As a long-time player of Depth, figured it's high time I gave my two cents about the game.
(Let's be real. What were you expecting from a guy with a Fijian shark god both as the username and as the Steam avatar?)
An asymmetrical multiplayer game of sharks with a third-person view against divers with a first-person view. Regardless of which side you're playing as, effective playing requires both getting familiar with different sharks and weapons used by the divers and some strategy and adapting to different situations.
''Blood and Gold'': The main game mode. Without exception the game mode most people will be playing.
The goal of a team of four divers is to escort an undersea robot STEVE as he moves through the map opening treasure chests, while collecting treasures scattered in the area. More treasure allows purchasing more expensive and powerful weapons. However, the majority of the treasure items lie in open areas, making gathering them extremely risky to all but the most experienced divers.
Meanwhile a duo of sharks hunts and eats the divers trying to stop them. Sharks gain evolution points every time they kill a diver. They can also attack STEVE to slow him down and sometimes even destroy him. Granted, the latter scenario is rare, considering STEVE can both take several hits and be repaired by the divers.
Diver Victory: STEVE escorted to the finish, or sharks run out of lives.
Shark Victory: Divers run out of lives, or STEVE is destroyed regardless of the number of remaining diver lives.
''Megalodon Hunt'': Five divers against the Megalodon. Divers unlock more powerful weapons the more treasure they collect. Whoever kills the Megalodon gets to play as him until he gets killed again. A quick game in which first to 10 000 points and a single kill as the Megalodon wins.
''Hide and Seek'': Shark seeking for divers armed only with Bang Sticks. Who will kill who?
''Haywire'': Originally limited to temporary events, this one features more standard FPS combat with two teams of six divers fighting against each other over the control of STEVE as he opens treasure chests. Every once in a while a player on either team will get a chance to play as the shark to wreak death on the opposing team. Whichever team's the first to claim more treasure chests wins.
STATE OF THE GAME
It was announced early in 2022 that Depth would receive no more major content updates or balance changes. Predictably, this announcement meant that the majority of the active players have now moved on to stormier waters, so to speak.
Well, Digital Confectioners is a small indie team, so if they wanted to make other projects as well, working on a single game forever was never an option.
Having said that, I must say that Depth has certainly come a long way over it's 7+ year active run. Several new sharks and new weapons for the divers.
Currently, the game is set to repeatedly run an event dubbed ''Remix''. The unlockable chests now contain skins from literally all the seasonal and other events Depth has ever had: Chinese New Year, Halloween, Christmas, themed events and more. The event is set to repeat automatically every 30 days.
Furthermore, every game mode Depth has ever had can now be played, including Haywire that was originally limited to temporary events.
Although, a progress seeking player may not have that many reasons to play Depth unless he's a skin collector.
(Though Depth certainly has no shortage of memorable skins for divers and sharks alike).
VERDICT
Simple and fast-paced underwater action. Easy to learn, more challenging to master.
Though the minimal current number of active players and said players likely being veterans means any newcomers will most likely find themselves outmatched. Therefore, I'd probably recommend waiting for a sale and purchasing the game for yourself and some Steam friends. Particularly if you want to play game modes other than Blood and Gold.
A must-have game for fans of sharks and underwater combat. Or both.

Ok boys time to get rich! Depth is a thrilling underwater multiplayer shooter where you can play as a diver or a Shark. Almost a decade after release I got around to playing this game as I always was intrigued by the look of it and I was glad I did. To start off the atmosphere of the game is excellent and has a dark eerie vibe. The lighting and underwater effects are well done and to this day still look sharp. The graphics are pleasant and the sounds are spot on. Also there are many cool aqueous maps that are well designed and feel unique. The concept of Depth always stood out to me and it is nicely executed, a classic. There is a lot to explore in this game and we are still just at the tip of the iceberg.
There are 7 species of sharks and even more sub species with different abilities to choose to specialize and hunt down your prey. There will be strategy involved when hunting down the diver team so choosing the right shark combination and abilities is crucial. Maneuvering through the abyssal waters feels great and the controls feel smooth and agile. Playing on the diver team is equally as fun. You have a large selection of weapons and tools to take down the sharks and complete your objective. As a diver you will not want to be caught out alone and will want to stay close to your fellow divers. The team based format is typically 4 divers and 2 sharks. The divers goal is to collect treasure lying around in the depths of the sea to fuel their adventure and eventual escape while the sharks are trying to eat every last diver. The feeling you get when being hunted by a shark is really exciting and at times scary.
Each game feels fresh and exciting and you can sink a ton of hours into this game. The online community is now small but still active since you can find multiplayer matches daily. There is a nice variety of game modes to choose from and if you cannot find real players you have the option to play against bots which is nice. There are a ton of cool skins to collect for your sharks and weapons which is a great touch to the game. I purchased several of the shark skins, some are so mean and awesome looking. I have owned this game for a long time and I am truly sad I did not play the game much sooner and feel like I missed out on a lot of potential fun. I had a lot fond memories playing this game and one I will happily go back to. This game usually goes on sale for around $5 which is a steal. If you haven't played Depth yet now is a great time, you wont want to miss out. I highly recommend this game and hope you enjoy it as much as me.

If you ever find this recommendation pick the game up when it comes on sale (it happens often) and try it.
Positives:
It's the most unique game I've ever played. The only pvp asymmetric shark v diver game that I've ever seen. The gameplay of playing diver is also unlike anything I've seen. For example, the mechanic of understand how to listen for your heartbeat. The only way that you'll be able to spot good sharks in time to kill them is by listening for the heartbeat first, then spotting them in that time frame and landing your shots to kill them. Diver also has one of my favorite mechanics in any game that I've ever played, being the bangstick. The bangstick is a weapon you can get off of spawn that one shots most sharks however the downside is that it's melee. Therefore, to use the weapon you have to hit the shark while it's charging you and that's the most difficult part about bangsticking is the timing. Playing with a bangstick is the equivalent of oleying a bull with the red fabric but the bull can choose whether to charge or not (bad analogy sorry). Shark is even more fun than diver imo. There are 12 unique sharks with varying special abilities. My favorite being hammerhead because BIG SLAMMMM (sorry OW2 brain took over). But actually it's really fun because you play like one of those balls in a pinball machine but in 1st person just smashing divers into walls.
Negatives:
The main 2 downsides to the game are the queue times and that it's not a noob friendly game. These 2 kind of go hand in hand because both of these really just come down to the very low player base. Mostly the only people who play the game anymore are the vets. You will get pub stomped by vets. You will get bangsticked (by yours truly). You will get welded (weakest weapon in the game that isn't even supposed to be a weapon). Well maybe not that last one but you get what I mean. The game has a steep learning curve with everyone else being at a high level. My recommendations to fix this are to play for fun NOT to win. The other recommendation I would make is playing with friends, friends make the game much more fun. Honestly, the only reason I'm still actively playing this game is because I have made so many friends off of its small community and playing with them makes the game really fun. The other main problem is the queue times, the only reason I'm writing this is because I'm in a 30 min shark only queue (feelsbadman). Honestly I think over a quarter (maybe even close to half) of my play time is from just waiting for games. This is something I've just gotten used to because I've played so often so I'm usually doing other things while queuing like chores, studying, or doing homework.
All in all amazing game, unfortunately it's standing on it's last legs with the player counts going from a steady 30-50 a few months ago to recently having a steady 20-40 players on. That doesn't sound like a big difference but it is. There are days when I'm trying to queue and there are only 5 players on. NOT EVEN ENOUGH FOR A FULL LOBBY, like cm'on man. I love this game just trying to play it lol.
P.S. forgot to mention but depth doesn't get any updates so don't expect any new content from what you see when getting the game

This is a fantastic spin on the PvP "monster vs person" game archetype. The controls are smooth, the progression is straightforward, and the suspense is artfully done. In almost all aspects this game is one that could have gone down in history as one of the best games made had it not been for one issue. The player base in now non-existent and with it being near impossible to get a full lobby without buying the game for 5 of your friends these days it is hard to justify the price point. It feels as though the developer created something fantastic and then just forgot about it in favor of new projects and releases. If they plan to downsize this game's servers due to the lack of player base why not drop the price point of the game or make it free and "upgrade" anyone who paid for it to some "gold" package with a couple goodies as a head not for buying it. I could very easily see this game finding a resurgence in players if this happened especially due to how thoroughly enjoyable this game is to play with friends. There is also such a huge opportunity to add to this game in small ways that other major production companies have been doing for years such as yearly weapon/shark additions that come with an event. Having worked on a development team for a high volume software I know how quickly and easily this kind of thing is done which could boost player base when coupled with a drop in price. I will always recommend this game but I will also always tell people to wait until it is on sale for 50% or more off. I hope the devs read this and take it to heart because I would hate to see this game die permanently. IF you decide to close the servers forever please at least give a way for people to host their own servers to continue playing with their friends. Thank you.
