Dark Souls is the new action role-playing game from the developers who brought you Demon’s Souls, FromSoftware. Dark Souls will have many familiar features: A dark fantasy universe, tense dungeon crawling, fearsome enemy encounters and unique online interactions. Dark Souls is a spiritual successor to Demon’s, not a sequel. Prepare for a new, despair-inducing world, with a vast, fully-explorable horizon and vertically-oriented landforms. Prepare for a new, mysterious story, centered around the the world of Lodran, but most of all, prepare to die. You will face countless murderous traps, countless darkly grotesque mobs and several gargantuan, supremely powerful demons and dragons bosses. You must learn from death to persist through this unforgiving world. And you aren’t alone.

I have played this game on Xbox 360 and PC. I bought it back in the day and it took me days to get past Blighttown. I didn't like it, I appreciated the challenge, I appreciated the combat designed with a fair mix of patience and risk/reward...but not its terrible performance, its lousy interface and the unfairness of the challenge it posed.
But, somewhere between my tenth death jumping through windmills or in a lake full of hepatitis looking for a bonfire my brain clicked. Well, that and I got the sword from the red dragon's tail at the beginning, and I could begin to understand how to fight Miyazaki's perverse design face to face.
And then, I started to love Dark Souls. To appreciate the players who left their mark to warn me of a secret or danger, or who helped me. I appreciated Solaire and Sigmeyer as the brave adventurers they were.
And I had fun. And then I started another run to build on what I learned.
Dark Souls is a game with problems. Lousy performance, Hitboxes that are sometimes a joke, a major drop in quality once you get past Ornstein and Smogh (dragon asses, please, what is that?), broken or poorly thought out mechanics, it's just as likely to die because a dragon vomits poison on you or because your FP's have dropped to near 10 and it's unplayable. You're just as likely to die because a dragon vomits poison on you or because the FP's have dropped to near 10 and it's unplayable.
But it's also a fun challenge, allowing you to face the journey (because Dark Souls is a journey in a ruined world as everything tries to make you quit) however you want - magic? pyromancy? swords? clubs? halberd? miracles? If you're a nerdy D&D fan, you'll probably be able to make a character that suits your preferences.
You'll be able to play alone, with the help of NPC's or players.
You'll cry with a puppy.
You will want to kill the archers of Anor Londo. And you will scream when you beat them.
You're going to hate the whole phase before Nito.
And you're going to hate the whole fight against The Bed of Chaos.
There are many people who say that this is THE BEST GAME EVER.
I think they exaggerate.
There are many others who claim that if you haven't played Dark Souls you're NOT A REAL GAMER.
I think those who say this, or similar things, are idiots. Playing Dark Souls doesn't make you special, get over it.
There are also a good amount of gamers who claim that this game is overrated.
I don't think they appreciate Dark Souls for what it is.
Do I think Dark Souls is a great game? Yes, and if you want to find out why this once niche game has become such a mass phenomenon you should give it a try.
