The film noir stealth game. Calvino Noir is the exploratory, sneaking adventure through the 1930s European criminal underworld. Architecture meets Noir as you become unwillingly entangled in a revolutionist plot. Inspired by the futuristic dystopian visions of Deus Ex and Blade Runner. Play as a disparate group of last-chancers as they fight for the future of a city sliding slowly into the gutter. Some are broken souls, some are merely damaged – all are fighting to forge a future in an ugly world ruled by those whose hearts are cruel and dark.

Calvino Noir review - EXCELLENT
Updated review Sept 24th, in English this time.
I’ve played the first three chapters of the game, having 7 chapters in total. Here are my feelings about it. Sorry if my English is not perfect.
I enjoy this game. If you are looking for an action game, Calvino Noir is not for you. If you like, as me, stealth games then you should have a look at Calvino Noir. It remembers me the old good game Commandos. You are playing three different characters, each one having a specialty: opening locked doors for one, neutralizing guards for another and using machines for the last one. Apart from the game style, the 30’s era immediately got my interest.
Technically, the game runs very smoothly on my mid-end computer. I have never had any crash nor bug during the first three chapters I have played. Graphics are fantastic. You discover new parts of the map as you move up/down and laterally, opening doors to new rooms. A zoom in / zoom out would have been great, so as to have a wider vieww, for example when a character is off screen or just so as to see the whope map. It would be a fantastic view.
I have not experienced difficulties in moving at the wanted place, maybe it is a bit more hazardous in stairs, but really it is smooth. One default thaht may happen: if you point just before a closed door, sometimes the character opens the door and enters the next room, even if you do not click on the door. Once you know this you will never move just behind a closed door before being sure there is no guard just behind.
One point that should be noted: the resolution is set to your screens resolution. I hoped I could play the game with a higher resolution using the DSR option of my graphic card but sadly I can’t.
About saving during the game, like most games coming from the console the saves are automatic at specific places, generally after each important phase of the game. The possibility to save at any time during the game would be a plus. The most annoying is you can't stop the game until you reach the next checkpoint. Surely the main default of the game.
I have not found the game frustrating until now, I think developers have recently tuned the game so as the guards are less sensitive. It is quite easy to surprise a guard from behind without being immediately killed. It happened to me at the beginning when I was not familiar with the game, but very quickly I've been ready to neutralize all guards in the first three chapters without being killed.
A few times I restarted from the previous checkpoint, as for most stealth games. Beware there is no guard just behind a closed door or he will surely kill you as soon as you step into the room. However, there is most certainly another way so as to avoid such a game over. It is up to you to find it....
The first two levels are well designed and consistent. You discover the plot as you progress, generally in discussing with the other characters when a goal is reached.
The music is very good. The ambient sounds are great. The game is very atmospheric.
20 coins are hidden in each level. Without the lamp, you can’t find them. Switch on the lamp and as you move you will spot a glittering point ahead of you. Coins can be used in the progress menu, so as to enhance two capabilities: moving silently and moving faster. It is a nice idea so as to motivate players to explore all the parts of each map. Personally, I enjoy this feature.
About translation: I play the French version of the game. Voices are in English and all texts on screen are translated into French. The translation is excellent. I have just noted a few typos and maybe one or two modern expressions not from the game period at the beginning of the game.
In conclusion, I have much pleasure playing the game. I would give it 8.5 out of 10. Thanks to the developers for this very refreshing game. It is beautiful, atmospheric and rewarding.
+ Graphics, music, sounds, atmosphere, diversity of levels, hidden coins, no bug nor crash, good playing time.
- Automatic saves, no high resolution option, no zoom in/out
