After playing through the campaign I was debating about recommending Call to Arms. From a real time tactics gameplay standpoint, its not fantastic. From a first person shooter gameplay standpoint its not great either. It used to be free to play but now costs money, and the 8 or so campaign missions don’t justify the cost. But when I started getting into the skirmish mode, my attitude changed, and I warmed up to the game.
The typical real time tactics skirmish gameplay revolves around calling in units from off-screen and ordering them to attack and defense points on the map. It’s a formula that has been tried and true for the genre and lives on in newer RTT games like company of heroes and others. I tend to enjoy more RTS type skirmishes that involved base building, teching up, and economy management, so RTT skirmish games seem pretty shallow in comparison.
Call to Arms pretty much follows the typical RTT formula but the ability to go first person and take control of the men and vehicles really shakes things up in a fun way. It’s a blast to get jump between the hottest firefights on the map to try your hand at turning the tide. When you take control of the vehicle, blast your way through the enemy line, and capitalize on it by going back to the RTT mode and moving your squads into the breach, it makes for compelling gameplay. Its almost like a battlefield like, and lighting up the bots and taking control of the points reminds me of the old battlefield games.
I think the novelty of the RTT and FPS switching really makes the game worth a recommendation, even if either mode wont blow your socks off. I wish the game included more content, but I purchased the game on sale and I can’t complain. I’m tempted to buy the “full” version which has a second campaign and more factions for skirmish to really flesh the game out.
EDIT: I now understand that this game’s true purpose is to be the base game for the excellent Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Ostfront DLC, which I would also recommend.
