Broadside Renegades
“Captain, we’ve got incoming… it looks like a whole… multiple fleets!”
An easy raid on a fringe system just turned into a battle against the whole Loyalist Armada. All your ships fancy gadgets are in the shop. Shoot and loot whatever you can get your hands on, and hope engineering can cook up something to keep you alive. Choose new items or upgrade the ones you have, and warp to the next sector. Each captain brings their own abilities and ship to the battle, while your crew mans the rest. Unleash a heavy broadside or deploy the rail gun against a cruiser, while missile launchers clear the fighter wings.
Charge the warp drive
Warp gates are for nerds and loyalists, use your personal drive to travel to new sectors. Planets may be heavily defended but have orbital goods for the taking. As long as you know how to fly, an asteroid field is a great place to make your stand.
There is no escape
Four different loyalist factions are sending everything they’ve got to end piracy once and for all. The Royal Watch will attack from afar while the Mercenary Knights attempt to slice your ship open with the plasma glaive. The longer the battle goes on, the more ships will join the fray. A handful of fighters will turn into an onslaught of destroyers. 30+ enemy ship types will follow you across the stars.

this is a criminally undiscovered gem... It plays super well: hybridizes survival horde games with a more active dogfighter like SPAZ. Rocking soundtrack. Mouse-only support. Lots of unlocks and ships that play TOTALLY differently (at least the first two which I've tried).
I randomly discovered this thanks to steampeek, it's the first time I used steampeek and I gotta say it's really set expectations high.
Works perfectly on linux via steamplay.

Technically, game performs great. Music and SFX are terrific. Play is more nuanced and interactive than I expected and the game is really fun as a result. Great "one more round" type feeling where starting over doesn't disappoint.

Possibly the best VS rogulike twin stick shooter I have played.
My initial expectation was somewhat low, thinking it’s just another generic VS game.
Well, I was wrong.
There are quite a variation of weapons that are unique to each other, enemies with unique attacks, and bosses that aren’t just bullet spongies that charge towards you.
I haven’t unlocked many ships yet, but each of them are different enough to provide replayability.
Lastly, what I praise the most is the combat. The game throws just right amount of enemies that a player can maneuver.
If I die, I know it’s my fault and not because I didn’t have enough meta upgrades.
This is a solid twin stick shooter/VS like.
I totally recommend this.

This is an awesome, immersive game! It runs super smoothly and the art is next level. Can't wait to see what the booty unlocks as I progress :D

When indie developer Joseph Renzi finished writing the last playable code for Broadside Renegades, he must have had a sly grin on his face. This game stands out as one of the simplest rogue-like experiences available—and yet, surprisingly, it is also one of the better ones.
Released recently on Steam, Broadside Renegades invites players to journey through the cosmos, blending 2D action and roguelike mechanics with a sci-fi twist. This indie game is a true hidden gem with a price tag that won’t send your wallet spiraling through a black hole.
Swashbuckling Gameplay
Like Vampire Survivors, Broadside Renegades delivers a mix of rogue-like mechanics and space pirating adventure, thrusting players into a universe filled with treasure hunting and cosmic battles. There’s no hard story per se, but you’ll choose your captain and upgrade your ship while aiming to outmaneuver foes and claim the loot of the galaxy.
As with all games of this type, your primary objective is to endure waves of enemies while hunting down and destroying ships laden with bountiful treasures and coins. However, it won't be easy as enemy vessels are scattered throughout the cosmos, fiercely defending their bounty and determined to thwart your plans.
To even the odds, you'll have access to two diverse ships from the get-go that you can upgrade to help level the playing field. Your first ship is equipped with flimsy broadside cannons that require you to hold both left and right triggers to fire. Thankfully, once you upgrade your arsenal, these weapons can auto-fire, allowing you to concentrate on maneuvering to find the perfect angle for your shots.
Man the Cannon
As you progress through the game, you'll have the opportunity to unlock a variety of additional ships, each boasting unique design and capabilities. For instance, the 'Tank' lives up to its name—a flying fortress that looks like it rolled off the assembly line of a sci-fi military factory. With its rotating turrets, this beast can absorb significant damage while dishing out enough firepower to make even the most hardened space pirate think twice about their life choices.
The game offers a wealth of weapon upgrades and perks to enhance your space-faring arsenal. You can outfit your ship with missiles for long-range attacks, deploy mines, or unleash flak cannons to create a storm of projectiles that would make any fireworks display jealous.
However, my personal favorite is the small but formidable deconstruction drones. These little minions are like tiny demolition experts, released from your ship to seek out and dismantle any enemy vessel they encounter. It's like sending in the repair crew, but instead of fixing things, they're just making a mess of the enemies.
The gameplay, as a whole, is packed with action, blending bullet hell elements with rogue-lite features. Players will face relentless waves of adversaries, necessitating strategic use of their ship's survival abilities. The top-down perspective and pixel art style evoke a nostalgic arcade vibe, while procedural-generated levels ensure that each playthrough remains fresh and unpredictable.
Treasure or Fool's Gold
Aesthetically, the game presents a unique graphical style that blends different artistic approaches. The foreground elements, for example, are composed of two-dimensional sprites in a classical old-school look, evoking nostalgia for retro gaming enthusiasts. The pixel art gives the ships, enemies, and other interactive elements a crisp, defined appearance that stands out clearly against the colorful backdrop.
In contrast, the backgrounds are lush and nicely done, as if they were created with a paintbrush rather than a computer stylus. These are adorned with palettes of swooshes and hues, resembling the work of an artist brushing his bold strokes across a dark canvas. While some players might find a clash between these two distinct styles, the backgrounds serve a purpose beyond mere aesthetics as they define each level, giving them a unique and different look.
The graphical style effectively showcases the action, though at times, lacks some of the flair one might expect from a space battle. For example, missile impacts could feature more vibrant red and orange explosions, and lasers should produce more sparks when fired from turrets or upon striking metal surfaces. Additionally, incorporating space debris would help convey the aftermath of a massive battle. These details, while minor, could significantly enhance the overall immersion in the game.
As for the sound, the game delivers a good experience that perfectly complements its vibrant visuals. The soundtrack pulses with a sense of adventure, dropping players in the high-stakes world of space combat. Each explosion and laser blast is accompanied by satisfying sound effects that add to the excitement and make each skirmish feel impactful. Combined, the visual approach and sound design create an engaging environment that keeps players hooked from start to finish.
Walking the Plank
While Broadside Renegades offers an exciting space pirate shooting adventure, it has shortcomings. First, the game throws players into the action without a proper tutorial, which can, perhaps, overwhelm newcomers. For instance, the indicators for ships and coins aren't clearly explained, leading to situations where players might chase an icon across the screen only to find a meager coin reward, hardly worth the effort.
Second, there's a noticeable imbalance in enemy ship damage capabilities. While one can expect larger ships to pose a higher threat, smaller ones can sometimes take down the player's ship with a single shot. This feels almost like a ‘cheap shot’ and can lead to frustrating moments where a player survives major threats only to be taken down by a seemingly insignificant enemy.
Third, the Warp Drive mechanic needs more clarity. Many players, myself included, assume it's an escape feature to catch a breather during intense battles. However, warping often leads to another fight with enemies in the new location, offering little respite. This can catch players off guard and potentially lead to quick defeats before they can even recover.
While not game-breaking, these issues can detract from the overall experience and may need to be addressed in future updates to enhance player enjoyment and game balance.
Despite the minor nitpicks, Broadside Renegades geared for rogue-like and bullet-hell fans looking for a unique twist with a space pirate theme. The blend of action, strategy, and exploration will appeal to players who enjoy challenging gameplay and the thrill of discovering new locations and is definitely worth a try if you appreciate games with a nostalgic feel.
Pros
Engaging rogue-like mechanics with a space pirate twist
Vibrant soundtrack and sound effects that enhance the experience
Intuitive controls with both keyboard and controller (but where's the mouse support?)
Lack of a tutorial can make the game confusing for newcomers
Graphics could benefit from additional details to enhance immersion
Warp Drive mechanic needs more clarity and can lead to unexpected battles

First couple runs were frustrating but I quickly got the hang of it and starting having a lot of fun. It's a criminal shame that this game only has 6 reviews (at the time of this writing).
It's like Space Pirates and Zombies and a *Survivors game had a love child.
