In 2023, Sony plans to port several of its main exclusives to PC, including
- The Last of Us 2,
- Ghost of Tsushima,
- Demon's Souls,
- Horizon Forbidden West.
Reasons for making this decision
The reason for this is simple - money. Despite The Last of Us Part 1 being an unoptimized game that doesn't work well on most PC hardware, Naughty Dog is currently working to fix it. However, Sony's strategy of releasing PlayStation exclusives on PC will remain unchanged as it brings the company a lot of money.
In Sony's financial report for the 2022 fiscal year, the "Other" category is listed as bringing in revenue for the company from games that are not PlayStation exclusives and peripheral devices for consoles such as PlayStation VR. These revenues are growing in tandem with the number of games ported to PC - almost doubling in 2022 compared to 2021. Therefore, Sony will continue to release its exclusives on PC, and we can expect them to increase the pace of game ports to PC.
Will Sony's exclusives remain?
As Sony owns Playstation, the majority of their revenue comes from the sales of consoles, and the success of the console is directly related to the sales of games on it. Based on this, it may seem that porting games to PC could deal a serious blow to Playstation sales. However, we dare to assume that Sony is not currently planning to release games for consoles and PC at the same time. The company will leave some "gap" in time to avoid losing console sales.
