Experiencing the ending of this game after playing Unity first was absolutely mind-blowing. Definitely the most underrated game in the series!

If I spent as much time looking at porn as I did looking for a reason to play this game then maybe I could write a better review, but as it stands if you’ve played AC4, or even 3, there is no reason to play this.
For the first time, not including the opener to AC3, you get to play as a templar. Does this shake the gameplay to its very core, no. Does this bring in new weaponry and ways to traverse the world, no. Does this change the narrative of the story in a way a regular AC game couldn’t do, also no.
This game is by no means bad, it’s quite good in fact. Pirating is still fun. This world is still immersive. The combat is still enjoyable, but if you’ve played Black Flag, then you’ve played this game.
You’d think that playing as a templar would really spice things up… you’d also be wrong. Shay is a man who makes his own luck and is the most serviceable protagonist you’ll ever meet. Everything he does, everything he says is just, “yeah most people would probably do that.” He doesn’t really have an arc, he doesn’t really have anything important to say, and as a result personal investment is whatever you decide it to be.
One positive I will give Rouge is the length of its story, it’s the shortest in the franchise. While that sounds bad it isn’t, out of the entire game I think there was maybe one tailing mission, thank fuck. Most missions are done fantastically, with scenes like the Lisbon earthquake to be one of the most memorable in the series.
If rouge had a story like AC2, or even something like AC1, I think it could have been the best Assassin’s Creed game to date, the gameplay just screams no filler and years of refinement, but it doesn’t. The story is so inconsequential it doesn’t matter, nothing you do has weight, and everything feels insignificant. At the end of something like Black Flag, I just sat in my chair thinking, what an experience. At the end of Rouge, I got up and grabbed some water thinking, that was fun. Because it is fun, but that’s it.
I’ll still recommend this game, because it’s the most consistent fun I’ve had in any Assassin’s Creed game so far, but it left me with nothing.
