Ape Out
APE OUT is a wildly intense and colorfully stylized smash ‘em up about primal escape, rhythmic violence, and frenetic jazz. Build up nearly unstoppable momentum and use your captors as both weapons and shields to crush everyone on your procedurally generated path to freedom. Stylish Escape: Embrace bold colors and a dazzling perspective as you rush through tight corridors, open areas, and twisting labyrinths on a mad dash for freedom. Overcome all manner of human opposition, nefarious traps, and breakable obstacles to find each exit and escape captivity. Grab and Smash: Unleash your primal instincts and incredible strength to overpower your captors. Hold them steady to create a human shield, smash their feeble bodies into walls, or throw one into another in a violent explosion of humanity. Dynamic Soundtrack: Find your rhythm in the chaos as a dynamic soundtrack of drums, cymbals, and decapitations drive the action to the edge of mayhem.

APE OUT has roughly two hours of gameplay, and after 100 hours I feel confident enough to write this review. APE OUT is repetitive, lacking in complexity, or much in the realm of replayability. However, I say with utmost confidence that APE OUT is one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had. The combat is elegant, enthralling, and ridiculously brutal. The "gamefeel" that APE OUT achieves at its highest moments is unlike any other. Gabe Cuzzilo, Bennett Foddy, and Matt Boch combine their respective genius to create a piece of unfettered artistic vision. The art style, phenomenal soundtrack, killer gameplay, and thematic consistency come together to form a genuinely moving experience that will leave you ranting after those two hours are up.
So how'd we get to 100? Well, those first two hours of APE OUT are merely the tip of the iceberg. With the addition of hard mode, arcade mode, break in, and a list of achievements so cruel I refuse to believe the designers have gotten near 100%, APE OUT transforms into something much, much more.
And that something is fucking bullshit. JESUS CHRIST this game has given me some of the most heart-wrenchingly, soul crushingly difficult gaming experiences of my life. Entire months have been swept up in the chase of a single achievement, badge, or what have you. APE OUT forces you to ingrain its expertly crafted mechanics into your very blood. I see APE OUT when I sleep. That's not normal, right?
And yes, the game can be phenomenally stupid and unforgiving and downright ridiculous at times when you should really have just been able to win this level if the fucking map generation wasn't having a fit and the enemies weren't all fucking crackshots and those stupid fucking rocket guys were never added into the game in the first place cuz they suck so hard and really just ruin it for everyone involved like why would you do this to us Foddy???
But that doesn't change the fact that you need to get this goddamn monkey game.

You know what's awesome?
When I go ooh-ooh, and then I go aah-aah, and then I take a veteran security guard as a human shield and throw him into a crowd of his colleagues before relentlessly slaughtering everyone else in the facility in a fit of pent-up frustration from being a test subject for the last 10 years.
