Hey Everyone,
I’m the Designer behind the game and wanted to give the most objective review possible for the game.
Hopefully, you’ll find it useful and helpful.
An Everyday Story was born with a simple idea: create a simple platform where the main protagonists were made of different materials like glass, wood or metal and have to face challenges tied to their fragility. It didn’t have a story at the beginning!
Then we started building up the studio, worked hard on alpha and got out there doing our best to create a simple yet functional game fueled by our passion and love for the medium.
Is the final game a masterpiece? I don’t think so, but I'm 100% sure we did our best and I genuinely think it can resonate with the player.
Surely it has some bugs we are trying to fix and Unity is not very helpful, to be honest, but I can guarantee we are fully committed to giving you the best experience possible.
Now I’m going to a short list of some key aspects of the game:
- Gameplay: it’s simple and that’s what we wanted from the start. There are no unique mechanics but we designed each level to feel a little bit different from the previous one, mixing up situations, characters and foolishness.
- Story: we depicted an everyday story filled with everyday actions, people and emotions. Is it more like An Everyday Sadness rather than Story? Just a little because indie developer, you know, but we also wanted to portray the concept of love in all of his forms.
- Aesthetic: for months I had the feeling that the game looked more like something made in 3D rather than a videogame. This was until people around me started praising the aesthetic of the game and I’ve to admit I like the final result.
- Music: this is the thing I’m most proud off. I’m made by 80% music and poured all my passion into the game. A big shoutout to our magnificent composer Rodrigo.
That’s it. Would I recommend the game?
Absolutely yes if you are into small personal stories, all over the place situations, cartoonish characters and are willing to accept indie problems.
No, if you are looking for longer experiences with complex mechanics and are not familiar with small imperfect indie titles.
I truly hope you’ll consider supporting us and hope you’ll have a great time playing our little creation.
Cheers,
Roberto

A beautifully presented puzzle platformer with some imaginative scenes and an emotional story, but quite a lot of bugs are still present.
I enjoyed playing An Everyday Story . It is wonderfully presented with a story book feel, narrated by the father in the family relationship. The story has nine chapters spanning his life with his wife and son and depicts the highs and lows in their relationship. The game lasts around four to five hours. We play three characters in the story that represent a special bond in the father's life. A tin soldier that his father made for him; A wooden boat that he made for his wife; and an origami bat that he made for his son.
The three items are used in platforming levels to help represent their origins and why they mean so much to the relevant recipient and it was really nice to hear their backstories. It made those items appear lifelike and gave them a sentimental attachment. Each item also has their own attributes that single them out from the others. The tin soldier can fire projectiles, jump, has a grappling hook it can swing on, and floats in the air using a parachute; the boat can float and has an anchor that it can use to pull switches; and the bat can fly and fold itself up to get under tight spaces. These features are used during platforming and puzzling, and we use each one during the story.
The best part of the game for me was the level design. It felt very original and was imaginatively realized in 2.5D. The clever use of objects and scenery brought the story alive as the narrator told his story and we moved around as one of the three characters. Each chapter told the evolution of their relationship from when he fist met his wife and their courtship, moving on to having their son, and finally telling the highs and lows of their marriage. The scenes represented these special moments and were very cleverly presented. There are lots of nice touches that will leave you impressed. It's not quite 'It Takes Two' level but they have a charm and ambiance about them. Each chapter has its own character, and that character is suited to the puzzles involved. It might have been interesting to have been able to switch between the three characters during each chapter, so that we could match the puzzle to the character ourselves, but that is not the case.
The puzzles are mostly quite easy, apart from one which had me completely stumped, and needed a guide. The most difficult part of the game is probably navigating around, so I would say that the platforming is more challenging than the puzzling. Often, you will find yourself trying to find the correct route to get out of a room or scene, and sometimes you may need to backtrack after finding items needed, or pressing switches etc. These routes are not always obvious so it can be easy to get lost. There are some crude hints lying around like a simple map of where you need to go, but other than that you will have no help. The puzzles were cleverly integrated into the story and although the majority of them were obvious, I still appreciated them just for the way they embellished the story.
It must be said that I encountered quite a lot of bugs during the game, which needed me to restart the level or go back to the last checkpoint. Things like getting stuck on the environments, or the puzzles seemingly getting themselves glitched. There is a really annoying feature of the game that has the main objective flash up every time you pause for more than two seconds, and it manifests as a corner of a page turning onto the game screen, and it obscures the view. If you want to just stop and think about where to go or how to solve a puzzle, it pops up like an unwanted friend. If you fix anything, please remove this feature. The narrator's voice sometimes cut out or audio wasn't normalized. You will notice lots of little bugs here and there throughout the game.
The story is nicely presented and illustrated using a story book aesthetic which introduces the chapter and sets the scene. It is also reasonably well voice narrated, and is quite emotional. I did get choked up a little at the end and it has many highs and lows packed into a small story. I really enjoyed it, and it felt genuine and heart-felt.
There are no achievements and no saving during chapters, so if you do quite the game during a chapter, when you return it will be at the start of the level, and levels are around thirty minutes each.
🍳Conclusion🍳
An Everyday Story is just that. A story that many of us could relate to, and it is centered around family and their relationships. Although it does contain some upsetting scenes, it also has some genuine heart-felt moments and emotional plots that will get you reaching for the tissues.
Platforming and puzzling is imaginative thanks to the wonderful level design, and although quite linear and mostly straight forward, these elements were nicely entwined within the story as to make it feel more lifelike.
The only negative of the game would be the frequent bugs I encountered throughout the game which did require me to restart levels occasionally. Other than that, I really enjoyed the experience.

Hey, y'all! I'm the other founding member of Cactus Production. Been playing the game these past few days and I have to say, playing it without all the major bugs encountered during playtesting feels like a breeze!
If you do encounter bugs (because yes, a few could still appear every once in a while), please, write them down in the form we have put in the main menu!
Speaking about my contribution to the game, I am the one who wrote the story, the dialogues and thought out the narration of our adventure, along with my partner. Lemme tell you, it was quite an adventure for me too! I took inspiration from my own personal experiences and I have to say, for being the first time I write something "officially", I'm pretty satisfied!
That being said, I thank each and everyone who will support us.
Long live the cactus!

It's a very charming game. It tells a familiar and down to earth story, and it does so really well.
The game conveys a great sense of adventure, even though you just control toys moving in mundane locations. In other words: great direction!
The narrator does a very good job and has a beautiful voice.
The game lasts 2-3 hours, which is probably the correct duration.
The game is pretty consistent with its art-style and direction, and serves the narration well. Proportions are a bit weird sometimes (the relative size of the avatars and the environment is not consistent). It can be justified by the oniric undertones of the game, but still.
In conclusion. If you like games with a strong narrative, and intimate stories, you should this game a try.

This is one of those games that you'll love even by non fans of the genre. The story is very accurate, the mechanics and puzzles within the game are unique, and the music and setting create a very nice experience. I am very satisfied with this purchase and strongly recommend it to everyone, hard to regret it.

I still have to finish the game, but so far I love it. The puzzles are cool without being stressful, each environment is unique in its own way and the music is fantastic, probably the best part.
