Buy this game on sale if you like exploring gruesome fleshy hellscapes in a horror themed game, definitely worth the $3.44 I paid for it. Otherwise... I find it hard to justify paying full price for this game.
Overview:
I got the game for two reasons: 1. I really like exploring gruesome morbid fleshy horror hellscapes. The kind you see in games like the Doom series, Prey (2006), and Lust for Darkness. And 2. I thought the monstergirl (AKA “Onoskelis”) in the cover art looked really cool and sexy and wanted to see more of her. The game delivers on both fronts but I was somewhat disappointed with several issues. The game is a first person horror adventure where you are thrown into the pits of Hell and must find a way out. This mainly involves hiding from monsters, sacrificing other damned souls, and possessing unwitting people if/when you lose your body to an unfortunate end.
The good:
The art style - Very detailed and immersive scenery you can easily get lost exploring in, even with the provided map. The artists did an excellent job of creating a diverse set of fascinating yet morbid landscapes that all fit the theme of Hell despite the wide variety. There were many times where I just stopped whatever gameplay task I was doing to simply admire the beautiful art of the environments.
The cover art monster - You get to see plenty of the Onoskelis demons, their designs are absolutely gorgeous (even better than the succubus in my opinion), and serve both as a survival challenge to evade and also later on in the game, a useful asset. And I have to say, its pretty obvious the art team put more effort on this character's design over the rest of the game's cast. It’s no wonder the actual succubi hate them, Onoskelis demons upstage even what a succubus flaunts.
Replayability - There is some replayability with multiple hidden endings, new game+, and lots of hidden collectibles to find. Collectibles can be used to unlock art galleries and 3d model viewers in the main menu.
Extra Modes - Succubus mode, as the name suggests, allows you to play as a succubus. This expands on the exploration abilities at your disposal for traversing the hellscape that the normal story mode does not have, and enables you to more easily find things you missed when playing the normal story.
The bad:
Dying – 90% of the times I died, I had absolutely no idea what killed me. Yeah there’s a takedown animation if you get caught by a monster, but if anything else kills you, you get teleported straight to a loading screen. One time I sprinted down an empty hallway and was kill teleported. Another time I was looking at a crushing spiky wall hazard, touched the flat side of it, and was kill teleported. One time I stepped on a particularly funny colored piece of floor…. Yep, kill teleported. Walked near the part of a room that was oddly lit, kill teleported. You get the idea. The fact that I died a lot in this game doesn't bother me as much as having little to no warning or explanation as to how I suddenly got killed.
Combat - More of a minor gripe, but the combat is also underdeveloped. As a damned human, your only choices of fighting involves smacking things with a torch, and rapidly waggling your mouse back and forth like a Wii remote when you're grabbed. I can give this a pass though since the game's focus is more on avoiding the monsters rather than fighting.
The Collectibles - Wayyyyyyy too many collectible pickups, literally several hundred to find across the game, and each one takes several seconds of animation time for your character to pick up, and if a monster or hazard suddenly pops up in the middle of you picking it up, too bad! Your character will ignore the danger in favor of spending several seconds gawking at the shiny trinket. You use those collectibles to unlock art/3D models in the menu gallery, but some of the unlockables are extremely expensive to get, requiring a very time consuming grind just to obtain. For example, finding a golden trinket will net you 1 or 2 "knowledge" points, but there are unlockables that cost 666 and 777 knowledge points to obtain. I find this not worth the effort especially since these items have no gameplay value whatsoever, and can only be gawked at in the main menu.
Gameplay Design - There’s also many areas in the game where you are stuck doing a scavenger hunt to collect “X” amount of “Y” things to unlock the gate and progress into the next area. Whether they’re disembodied organs, statue pieces, or baby sacrifices, it gets pretty repetitive pretty fast. The ability to possess demons is also a bit wonky. You have a "timer bar" which looks like a health bar, showing you only get a limited amount of time to control a possessed demon before it mentally evicts your soul. You can murder damned humans to help replenish some of that timer bar, but the rate at which that timer bar depletes can change without rhyme or reason. For example, when possessing one of the fire demons, my timer bar immediately depleted within seconds as I moved, but another time it depleted extremely slowly, and sometimes even regenerated by itself.
Level Design - The level designs also have several problems. First, its often extremely cramped with barely any space to move anywhere, so many times your view is dominated by dull low-texture grey rock walls right in your face. Yet at the same time, some of the environments are also overly detailed with objects and scenery to the point where it all looks like incoherent, messy clutter. This also presents a problem with figuring out where you can and cannot traverse because of the wonky terrain geometry. This isn’t helped by the fact that the game likes to oversaturate colors and randomly blur your vision in certain areas, making you functionally blind. The saturation problem is at its worst in segments where you have to swim underwater. The lighting is so obnoxious that your entire screen is just a big bright blob of red and this has resulted in me drowning to death on multiple occasions from being unable to see where I'm swimming.
Extra Modes - Newgame + and succubus mode are sadly very boring because there are no story/plot elements playing out, most of the puzzles are already completed, enemy monsters are practically a non-issue, and the whole experience devolves into a walking simulator through the various map levels. You also don’t get to do any succubus things when you play as a succubus… unless you count scampering on all fours, climbing bony handlebars that humans can't reach, torturing babies, butchering the damned souls, and bullying the Onoskelis demons.
Onoskelis Demons – The only time you spend interacting with them is when you’re running away from them, getting murdered by them, or possessing their bodies to play as them in 1st person. None of these offer much chance to... uh... appreciate the demon lady’s impressive ‘assets’, unless you want to risk your life sneaking up from behind to peep on them like a creepy voyeur.
Side remarks:
-Why are there so many babies in hell? What did they do to deserve damnation? And why does the succubus demon’s voice sound like a 3-pack-a-day chain smoker?
-I was tempted to buy the game "Succubus", which is made by the same developer as Agony. The game is more highly rated by steam users, boasts more action, AND there's a DLC skin that lets you play as the oh so awesome Onoskelis demon... BUT THERE'S A CATCH! The catch is the Onoskelis demon skin for the Succubus game is NOT the same one as in Agony. Its is more plain in design, more bony, and lack the artistic details that made the Onoskelis from Agony look awesome.
Hey devs! If you're reading this review, if you bring back the original Onoskelis design into your game Succubus, then I'll promise to buy it!

Game has mixed reviews and I totally get why but I personally think this game is still well worth playing even if for just one playthrough. It is a very unique experience, it can be a bit clunky and confusing at times but visually it is absolutely striking and very unique. I just found it a very fun world to get lost in, explore and look around in.
One thing I love about games compared to other mediums is the unique experiences they offer and this is one of them. I came in wanting a game where I could just walk around and explore hell and that's exactly what I got.
That being said I am someone that can just turn a blind eye to clunkiness and awkward design. So if you find that hard to ignore you might not have a good time.
It also has quite an interesting story with multiple endings. The story can get a bit too convoluted at times but was interesting none the less.
I've so far done one playthrough, enjoyed it and had a very unique experience and do plan to do more playthroughs for the other endings in the future. So despite it being a bit of a mixed bag, I do recommend it.

Not bad for a walking simulator that takes place completely in Hell. Game is pretty frustrating in terms of where to go and what to do but if you're bored and just wanna relax it's a perfect getaway. That is if you're a complete gore hound and find torture relaxing like I do. For everyone else I'd say skip it. Only get this if you like plodding through blood and shit while seeing demons fucking and having abortions. I personally love it. But not everyone might. Decent graphics, good sound...that's about it. Thumbs up if you're a sicko.

Very interesting game albeit extremely graphic and not for the faint of heart.
If you want to experience walking through hell then this is the game for you.
The negative reviews are mostly just people that had the game removed from their library because the devs had to list the uncensored version separate from the regular version. Those people can still download the game again without issues but they didn't do their research and just had a knee jerk reaction.

This is the most bizarre sort-of-recommend I've made. Do NOT play this if you're sensitive to nudity, sex, or gore (sometimes all at the same time), if you're looking for an action packed romp through hell, or have zero tolerance for jank. It actually reminded me of Scorn a little, mostly from the striking artwork, basic game mechanics, and next to zero hand holding, Agony's really just much less technically impressive. Agony's art design did, however, manage to constantly leave me impressed. Its gameplay wasn't great but your character's control was good. Enemy designs were decent, if a bit ridiculous with the physics. The level and game design also left much to be desired as I had spent a good bit of time wandering only to look up what the heck I was supposed to do. Other than that, the ending was okay, but then I watched the story explained here

i don't know what i played, this is the most disturbing game ever to me, but it was fun, a unique experience

I think overall its a good horror game. Its very lore heavy which is nice, my only problems were the lightning hurt my eyes, and constantly getting snagged on things. Other then that it had good lore, good graphics, and was better then I was actually expecting.
