About
The game is, as other reviews mention, a space fighting game. You have a pretty linear story line, no choices, no space exploration. Each misssion is basically in a small sector, you have to fly somewhere, stay close to something, and kill all the enemies.
There are so-called exploration missions, where you can find some blueprints and resources for crafting new ships and upgrading your weapons. But it's basically like another mission, where you have to find some well hidden boxes and enemies keep spawning.
Look and feel
The graphics and sound are decent. The story is okay, nothing special. It's somewhat visual novel style dialog. The character portraits however lack mimics, which makes it feel a bit dry. The controls with mouse and keyboard felt intuitive and allow you perform some nice maneuvering during the fights and in-structure explorations.
Tips
The game has a few quirks, you should be aware of, to make your life a bit easier.
Beware of asteroids. They don't do high damage in particular, but you may get stuck inside and have to restart. You need to start the mission from the beginning, as there are no savepoints inside a mission, but missions are not that long anyway. It can be annoying in an exploration mission, when you took some time to find all the blueprints.
Exploration missions, well, get radar probes and use them. Ideally, get one more than there are blueprints, then you will get an info that you found all, instead of "no more radar probes" at the end. Makes it a bit more clear. You may need some keycards, which you get by playing other exploration missions or progressing through the story. Just re-visit the exploration mission later. You should find the blueprints for crafting ships. They are well hidden. Radar probes reveal their position, but not how to get there, so anticipate some searching, esp. in the last exploration mission.
Later exploration missions have more enemies, more challenging enemies, and they respawn faster. Just keep one little fighter alive. That will prevent the respawns and one guy is hardly able to bring you down. Especially, since they tend to get stuck in some structure.
Don't forget to equip the mining laser before exploration missions and to replace it with your ordenance for regular missions. When mining, prefer the colored asteroids.
Upgrade your ship, as soon as possible. You will have more then enough resources. Don't buy ships, just get the crafted ones.
I preferred using the laser, twice. Does quite decent damage and is precise and fast. Useful for shooting down incoming missiles and mines. Later just use the Lvl. 16 weapon, photon cannon or so, to bring down enemies faster, esp. larger ones.
Verdict
All in all, I wouldn't call it particularliy exciting, but it was definitely fun. It's relatively easy and can be played through in a few hours. Perhaps get it on discount or in a bundle – you are unlikely to play it more than once.
