NBA 2K has evolved into much more than a basketball simulation. 2K continues to redefine what’s possible in sports gaming with NBA 2K20, featuring best in class graphics & gameplay, ground breaking game modes, and unparalleled player control and customization. Plus, with its immersive open-world Neighborhood, NBA 2K20 is a platform for gamers and ballers to come together and create what’s next in basketball culture. Remote Play requires PS Vita system and sufficiently robust Wi-Fi connection. Online features require an account and are subject to terms of service (playstationnetwork.com/terms-of-service), privacy policy (playstationnetwork.com/privacy-policy), and the game publisher’s privacy policy.

The base game is fine, though without the online features the game really has like 30 hours worth of gameplay.

NBA 2K20 builds upon the franchise’s well-established foundation with a deep, polished basketball simulation that strives to balance realism, accessibility, and a wealth of content. Developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports, this installment refines core gameplay mechanics, introduces meaningful changes to player control and presentation, and offers an expanded career mode that showcases the series’ continued commitment to storytelling. While the game delivers an incredibly immersive on-court experience and a variety of game modes to satisfy different playstyles, it is also weighed down by persistent issues with microtransactions and monetization that affect the overall experience.
On the court, NBA 2K20 offers some of the most fluid and lifelike basketball mechanics to date. The player movement system feels more grounded, with better weight and momentum physics that make actions like driving to the hoop, defending, and transitioning between plays more realistic. Shot timing, dribbling, and passing have all received subtle but noticeable improvements, making skillful play more rewarding. The AI also feels more competent, with smarter defensive rotations and more natural off-ball movement from teammates. These refinements contribute to a satisfying gameplay loop that captures the nuances of real basketball.
The MyCareer mode is once again a major highlight, delivering an engaging story that blends Hollywood-level production with player customization and development. In NBA 2K20, players create their own character—nicknamed “Che”—and guide him through a dramatic journey from college basketball to the NBA. With a cast that includes Idris Elba and Rosario Dawson, the narrative touches on themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and personal growth, offering a surprisingly emotional arc that grounds the usual athletic rise-to-glory in a human story. Off the court, players can train, sign endorsements, and interact in the Neighborhood, a shared online social space that functions as a hub for various activities and modes.
MyTeam, the series’ fantasy team-building mode, returns with new challenges and card collections, but it remains one of the most contentious aspects of the game due to its heavy reliance on virtual currency. While the mode itself offers deep strategic gameplay and competitive appeal, the progression system can feel grind-heavy without spending real money. This creates a noticeable imbalance between players who invest time and those who spend cash, particularly when it comes to acquiring top-tier cards or competing online. The presence of microtransactions throughout various modes, including cosmetic upgrades in MyCareer, undermines the game’s otherwise strong design and alienates some players.
Presentation-wise, NBA 2K20 sets a high bar with authentic broadcast-style visuals, lifelike player models, and impressive arena atmospheres. The attention to detail is striking—everything from jersey movement and facial animations to crowd reactions and commentary is meticulously rendered. Commentary teams are dynamic and vary depending on the game, offering new insights and dialogue that keep games feeling fresh. The soundtrack, curated with a mix of hip-hop and mainstream hits, adds energy and modern flair, complementing the on-court action well. Audio design, from the bounce of the ball to the roar of the crowd, further enhances immersion.
Franchise mode, or MyLeague/MyGM, continues to offer one of the most comprehensive management simulations in sports gaming. With tools to control every aspect of a team—from roster decisions and finances to drafting and player morale—this mode remains a haven for strategic thinkers and NBA purists. The inclusion of detailed stats, historical data, and adjustable settings means players can craft the league of their dreams or recreate historical seasons. However, some fans may find that innovation in this area has slowed compared to other parts of the game.
In summary, NBA 2K20 excels in delivering a compelling and authentic basketball experience, thanks to its refined gameplay, deep modes, and immersive presentation. Its commitment to storytelling and realism is evident in every dribble, pass, and cutscene. Yet, the pervasive presence of microtransactions and the grindy nature of some modes hold it back from achieving its full potential. For fans of the sport, it’s still one of the best virtual representations of basketball available, but it also serves as a reminder of the growing tension between game design and monetization in modern sports titles.

Very good and spectacular game made by 2k. It is so realisitic and very exciting to play even for a fan that isn't quite into basketball. The game is harder than football though.

Still one of the best 2ks made. The only issue is modding on the steam deck for this game is virtually impossible. NO My career since its linked to online play.
