We. The Revolution
We. The Revolution is a unique game with a singular art style set in the blood-soaked and paranoid world of the French Revolution, where often you could not tell a friend from an enemy. As a judge of the Revolutionary Tribunal, you will have to trudge through this setting passing sentences, playing a dangerous political game, and doing everything in your power to not to be guillotined as an enemy of revolution. The plot of We. The Revolution will put you in morally ambiguous situations in which there are no obvious solutions, and the decisions you made are never unambiguous. The power over human life and death is a heavy burden, responsibility and strength that can affect the fate of the revolution. keep that in mind each time when passing sentence in the courtroom, while assigning tasks to your agents, giving speeches, and weaving political intrigue behind the scenes.

You are a judge appointed by the Revolutionary Tribunal, swept up in the tide of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. As a judge, you must preside over cases almost daily. Based on the interrogation results, the jury's impressions, and your decisions, defendants may be acquitted and released, imprisoned, or sent to the guillotine. Inevitably, you may find yourself entangled in factions and political strife. Strict adherence to evidence-based trials, the principle of legality, and the presumption of innocence are less significant than the fury of the mob or the resolutions of the National Convention. You might choose to rely entirely on your moral conscience in your duties, but doing so could lead to your death in the streets within days. Will you become a hero to the people of Paris, or will you drown in their blood?
Indeed, perhaps this is merely the story of a common tragedy that exists in any era and can be seen anywhere.

This game is a solid 7 or 8/10. Good story, that's quasi historically accurate with game mechanics that intertwine with the story in a very interesting way. If you like 'papers please' then you'll surely like this. This would be a 9/10 if the story was able to keep itself interesting, but after a little bit more than the halfway point, it started to get a bit convoluted. I finished this game in 12 hours, but I think the game would have been better if it was a bit shorter.

We. The Revolution
CONTENT WARNING: WTR CONTAINS STRONG REFERENCES TO ABUSE, SUICIDE, SEXUAL VIOLENCE, FAMILY VIOLENCE, AND MORE
WTR is an interesting title covering various genres but ultimately consists of story-telling via text and some voiced interactions. For the majority of WTR, the core loop is deciding the fate of offenders while maintaining reputation to ensure you stay alive. Over time, the game adds layers of strategy as the story develops.
The primary themes surround politics, corruption and the path to power. However, elements of WTR do cover potentially triggering material such as sexual violence.
Graphically, the game uses an interesting art style of large polygons, creating a relatively uncommon approach; sound design is lacking as much of the game (especially later on) is relatively silent or close to it. Bugs were minimal, and overall, the game seemed to run well.
Critical to WTR is the narrative. It is decent, with some unexpected twists and turns, while still providing the player with some freedom of choice. However, towards the end, it becomes more and more clear that the major points of the story are out of your control. Interestingly, the game expects you to fail, so some cut scenes don't always make sense. WTR uses chance frequently as well, which can bother some people.
My main criticism is that the game is too long; I found myself getting bored with a lot of the game play towards the end, especially when unexplained things occur (I am avoiding spoilers). It can also be unclear what elements of a cause connect to things like "motive" or similar.
I recommend WTR to those who enjoy decent narratives and are interested in the overall themes, again being politics, corruption, and power.
Unrefined Dotpoints
- Graphics use a unique polygon style while maintaining interesting details
- Links between evidence and questions can be confusing. Often, there could be multiple connections, but the game only expects one.
- Very mature themes, including violence, sexual references, and violent or sexually motivated crimes.
- Game play split into being a judge (sentencing people), relations management and low-level strategy.
- Intrigues seem reliant on chance, most other parts of the game do not have this problem
- Some events seem to be slightly bugged
- Story is interesting, but I found it difficult to get invested due to the length of the game
- Last part of the story is needlessly automated, could have just summed it up and saved time.
- Final act drastically expands the combat side of game play. Good refresh
- Final act doesn't properly explain how the enemy invades, they can randomly attack from a different direction.
- Towards the end, I found myself caring less and less about the "judge" part of the game.
- Choices matter to a certain extent, but the major story points seem fixed or, at the very least, left up to chance.

It's a very interesting game. After intially trying it and stumbling around unsure why I'm not getting into it, I put it aside for later for a long time. I tried to get into again several times, and failed. And this made me seriously think because I was fairly knowlegeable about the setting, and couldn't help but appreciate the wonderful visuals, and there didn't seem to be anything about it that rubbed me the wrong way ideologically. And what I realized was that I was having trouble with the game because it expected me to - and not terribly often - read through a short case file summary carefully.
It wasn't the game, it was me. I was trying to play a rather excellent game of being a judge, one that even allows you to be a grossly corrupt and incompetent judge who doesn't even read the case files, and excell at it without, you know, reading a paragraph of text here and there.
So, once I forced myself to do some very basic reading, the game gripped me and I ended up revisinting figures and events of the french revolution on the side, and thinking about life, the universe and what it all means more than I did in years. It's really a cool, worthwhile game and I hope the commendable effort and dedication that went into making it was worth it for the wonderful people who decided that this was what they wanted to do.

Highly recommended for people interested in French history and the politics during the time of the revolution and the social mobility outcome that comes with it.

This is a rough game to get into and certainly not everyone, but I enjoyed it. It reminded me somewhat of the first Dune game in that it tries to blend various different types of games together. The game doesn't excel in any of these areas, but the mechanics of the various mini-games bleed over and work together well enough.
There's a lot of RNG in the game, which can be interpreted as intentional to show just how little life was worth and how fortunes changed rapidly during the French revolution, but it doesn't feel very satisfying, despite the acknowledgement.
The lack of tooltips and explanation for most choices are pretty atrocious. :(
