Mendel is a science creativity sandbox. Pilot a probe on a far away planet, gathering samples from the weird native flowers and breeding them together to make new hybrids. Watch their genes merge and mutate, just like those of our own world, producing strange new creations to grow in your alien gardens.
- Grow your own Proteus. There are no goals, no objectives, no pressure. Just a peaceful sandbox in which to experiment, create, and relax.
- Tens of thousands of possible surreal plants
- Watch your plants change and mutate as their genes combine and rearrange, just like those or our own world
- Inspired by science! Mendel is the first game to receive the Alfred P Sloan Foundation Public Understanding prize, because they recognized a commitment to showing how beautiful the world of genetics is.
“It was kind of like bubble wrap. You really get into it and can’t stop planting and trying to make them do things.”
-Nathalie Lawhead, creator of Tetrageddon and Everything Is Going To Be Ok
“Mendel is a beautiful game of digital exploration, inviting experimentation, reflection and calm.”
– Jacob Wood, Indie Hangover

I love this. It feels like a spiritual successor to this rinky dink flash game about cross-breeding flowers I remember liking a lot on addictinggames. It asks very little and it is exceedingly simple, but I think it would appeal to anyone who likes these sorts of quiet, small plant sims like I do.

This is by far the most buggy game in my library, yet somehow worth every moment of it. This game makes the stress melt out of me, i love planning my genetic projects, aiming for certain shapes, colors, sizes, etc.
Some ideas for the developer based on my 100+hrs playing: fix the UI so it doesn't leave blurs or arrows in the screen after closing them, UI Fix: add the petals/leaves/flowers/bulbs to be visible in the name index, fix the flower picking so you dont reach into the ground or face the wrong direction when picking, add in-game or steam achievements to make players want to push the boundaries of genetic splicing, the ability to earn speed upgrades, alternate or randomly generated terrain options, color sliders for the sky / built in shader options, a sky view / zoom out option to see the whole planet at once, multiple save file options.
