For Max Payne, the tragedies that took his loved ones years ago are wounds that refuse to heal. No longer a cop, close to washed up and addicted to pain killers, Max takes a job in São Paulo, Brazil, protecting the family of wealthy real estate mogul Rodrigo Branco, in an effort to finally escape his troubled past. But as events spiral out of his control, Max Payne finds himself alone on the streets of an unfamiliar city, desperately searching for the truth and fighting for a way out. Combining cutting edge shooting mechanics with a dark and twisted story, Max Payne 3 is a seamless, highly detailed, cinematic experience from Rockstar Games.

Max Payne 3 might be the most honest depiction of depression I’ve ever experienced in a video game.
The story and setting aren’t the point; they’re just the backdrop to Max’s internal state. Everything is filtered through his exhaustion and his self-loathing. Many critics took issue with how the game seemingly ignores Max’s character development from Max Payne 2, where he appeared to have moved on from the death of his family. But that criticism misunderstands trauma. Real trauma doesn’t resolve cleanly. You don’t “finish” grieving. You carry it, and sometimes all it takes is a dream, a memory, or a familiar pain to drag you right back into the dark.
Rockstar’s greatest achievement here is turning a bright, sun-soaked Brazilian setting into something that feels just as cold and suffocating as the snow-covered streets of the earlier games.
To Max, protecting the Brancos is an excuse to keep breathing. A reason not to put the gun to himself. If he has someone to protect, he has a purpose.
This game is a character study wrapped in a third-person shooter. Bleak, uncomfortable, and uncompromising.

Had fun playing as a drunk and depressed ex-police-detective shooting lots of bad people, while listening to the soundtrack produced by my favorite band.
Also learned a plenty of portuguese slurs

First of all, let me say rest in power, James McCaffrey such a talented voice actor and Mo cap actor, genuinely taken too soon but other than that such a beautiful game, beautiful story music gameplay just overall it’s amazing honestly this one in the series is overhated, i’ll never understand it, I grew up with this game and it has a special place in my heart, now that I could play it again on PC it’s amazing! 10/10

Best third person shooter ever made. I must have easily put over 500 hours into the PS3 version. The actual GAMEPLAY part of this game literally does not get better as far as a third person shooter goes. Get the authentic experience of being a fat, bald, drunk junkie killing the entire poverty class in a stereotype of Brazil while James McCaffrey gives his best performance as far as Max goes. RIP to a great actor.
However, if you've never played the first two, go play them before this so you understand everything. The story in MP3 is mostly standalone and it's not required at all, but it will not hit the same for you.
The diehard Remedy fans love to say this isn't a proper MP game. I disagree entirely and I've been playing them as long as you. After the events of MP 1 and 2, it's extremely realistic for him to descend into full blown alcoholism and addiction. If Passos doesn't show up, he would have kept wasting away in NYC without an enemy to fight. The comic book cutscenes in the first two games were because of budget constraints, it just turned out to be a cool stylistic choice that remains all over MP3. When you die, during the flashbacks especially, comic frames are everywhere. The game has major throwbacks to the first two games, in the second flashback Max has he makes the exact face that was stuck on the Max Payne 1 model during the grenade launcher bit. The entire game is about familiar habits and trauma following you no matter where you go, even 5000 miles away in South America (Max has never left New York). This game doesn't forget what it came from at all. This is Dan/Sam Houser's way of finding a way to continue his story while adding their signature flair.
The alternative was we never get a Max Payne game again. At least with this title, the trilogy comes to an end and Max's story is concluded.
Both of the Housers love their "clueless American in a foreign place" trope and this game is the full realization of that.
Growing up is realizing that Max Payne 3 had it right.

Best game ever if Rockstar doesn't make a 4 I'll shave my head, drink vodka, and take painkillers then go on a rampage in a favela in Brazil
