One of the first PC games from my childhood. I got the demo on a demo disc from the first issue of PC Gamer magazine. I only had a few scenarios unlocked and no campaign mode, but the hours I sank into that demo back then was absurd.
Fast forward to today, its readily available on a platform I still use, and I get to play campaign mode, plus other scenarios I never got to try!
This game will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I wish I had a modern version, but the original will do until then.
The game has some depth, though not a lot. Out build your opponent, make money, seize forts through espionage, then take their cities through bribes.
Its simple, but the espionage adds something that a lot of other games do not have.
I also loved building inns and hiring as many heroes as I could, sometimes letting games last until I collected an army of heroes to attack my enemies with.
S tier game.

I love this game. I've put thousands of hours on this game via the disk and I was stoked to see that it was available on steam. This game has such a classic strategy vibe, and the different races all feel very unique and great for different play styles.

I've played this game on and off since it was released, which I'm sure was early 2000's and not the 2015 date... super good, super fun and super entertaining, jumped at the chance when it was on steam as I use to have it on CD.

I absolutely loved this game in the 90's and it is still a great game. My favorite aspect of this game is policies and espionage. Kingdoms can be bought with gold or blood. Someone declare war on you? Well, wouldn't it be a shame if you already bribed their Generals and their army becomes your army.
You will have to manage economy and happiness. If you're about to go broke, remember that you make gold with each enemy unit you kill. Sometimes war is a necessity for survival. Killing civilians, even rebellious ones will reduce happiness causing further rebellion.
Egyptians are my favorite as population is power. Establish you place of worship as soon as it is economically viable. The more population you have, the more influence you can have with however you choose to express that. Just remember to hit the Space Bar to pause the game during critical choices you make.
Research can massively increase your efficiency. I make custom games with one mining resource on the map. Send one civilian to stand on the resource so others cannot build upon it. Migrate my population and build towns around that resource. Research advanced mining and profit.
This is to Strategy games what Baldur's Gate 2 is to RPGs; instant classic.
