non-binary
“non-binary” is a game in three acts that blends bullet hell and storytelling to bring you into the lives of two non-binary people.
you will accompany Elisa or Luca from childhood to adulthood, experiencing with them frustration and joy, discovery and change.
“non-binary” features two different paths: one for a character socially defined as female and the other, male.
at the beginning of the game, the character will be randomly assigned to you.
at the end of the game, you will be able to retrace their story or live that of the other protagonist.
we recommend that you experience both stories: by combining personal experiences and the testimonies of those who have supported us, we have created two very different paths. the lives of non-binary people are as varied and complex as those of anyone else. that’s why the game doesn’t aim to tell everyone’s story, but only a small glimpse into a complex world.
if you are a non-binary person and you are going through a bad time, remeber: you’re not alone 💛🤍💜🖤
many countries have LGBTQIA* associations that can provide support.
if you’d like to share in the comments those active in your country, it will make it easier for those who may need them to find them.
and if you feel the need, you can write us.

it's definitely a good game, the story did lose me at times but i got the premise and it was nice. i get that it is supposed to be two different stories but it would've been more attention grabbing if it focused on the feelings of being a non-binary person instead. like, there were more ways to go about it like maybe talking more on the existential feelings of never being fully understood by someone you love or anyone in your day to day life (etc). that would make it much more relatable for most people.
if you're looking for a game that you can kind of relate to and you're more agender/aromantic/asexual leaning, i wouldn't recommend this for you. but nevertheless its a fun little game.

Short but well-written story, about feelings that are so specific to my own life that it sometimes hurt to play, in a good way. Mainly the unseen but constant fear of disappointing the people you care about. The bullet hell part is easy but accurately shows how hyperaware I feel every time a gendered word is used. Also, this gets bonus point because I'm Italian and the team who made this is Italian too, making the story feel closer to home. The only downside is that the game's target is so specific that cis people probably won't end up playing this.

I just really love this game. I think its amazing and I've replayed both sides of the story a lot. I love how it shows what it can be like and they're experiences. Love this game so much, arguably one of my favorites at this moment <3

hgnghhhfhfhhghhjhhhghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh okay!! this is a game that tells the story it wants to tell. didn't quite click with me the way the devs intended it to; but i do like the way gender is presented and pushed onto the player and the story + mechanics. the themes and story and mechanics (gods, the mechanics!! excellent usage of bullet hell!! the customization of your ball-self at the end!!!!) were very simple, but effective. it's not a game intended for huge deep explorations of 'what it means to be outside the gender binary' it's a little deeper than surface level telling and showcasing on 'how gender is forced onto people outside the societal binary and how awful that feels and is' with a dash of romance (unfortunate, but part of the typical experience of being alive- i do like how it's handled, mostly). i like it! excellent for a free-to-play game with EXCELLENT execution of how gender is forced and arbitary. play it if you've got like twenty minutes free. thanks, devs!! <3

Non-binary tells the story of two lives that come to realize their gender identity in a life of enforced gender roles. Even from the beginning of the characters lives, you are immediately attacked by the expectations and role that everyone around you wants you to fill. As an agender person myself, I loved the game even more as it really does show what it is like from either side, AFAB or AMAB.
It's easy to play and there is a lot of different ways for the story to go depending on your choices and how far you make it in the bullet hell. I would highly suggest when reading to dodge the bullets first, then read after.
Alright here's for the details:
Graphics:
The entire game is made of simple shapes, but that is in no way a downfall. Not only does it make it much easier to focus on the text and bullets, it really helps to drive the theme.
Difficulty:
The difficulty can be adjusted to standard to hard, and if you are worried about it being too hard, it really is not! If you get hit too many times, you still get an ending based on where you got, not a certain time quota you have to reach.
Game Length: I've done a few runs, and it depends on how you play and how far you get. I would suggest doing both the AMAB and the AFAB stories, which can both be completed in less than an hour.
Replay ability:
Non-binary is a game with several different endings, or routes to go down. You have two characters to follow and at the different points that you "loose" or "die" creates a different ending dialogue. Additionally there are several different dialogue choices as well. On top of that, you can also do the harder mode for the bullet hell and play that way. I would highly recommend doing more than just the one playthrough of each character. It doesn't feel too repetitive as you can skip through the dialogue pretty quickly to get to the part you want, just be careful not to get hit when you do that!
Trigger warnings:
While the story can be really sad, and most of the comment section says they were desperately trying to dodge and read through tears, there aren't many trigger warnings that I think need to be mentioned besides the occasional LGTBQIA+ slur. If this triggers you I wouldn't recommend playing, but otherwise the game is very mild.
So would I recommend?
Yes! It doesn't matter what your own gender identity is, the game is perfect. If you are just looking for a story, minigame, or an insight into what it's like to be non-binary, the game does all of that. If you yourself are non-binary, the game will probably really resonate with you and your own experiences. All in all 10/10 game.

I was going through a bit of a gender crisis before playing this game, as an enby who wears skirts and dresses exclusively. Luca's story helped me realize I don't need to appear androgynous. Both stories were extremely touching.
Though, if you have a short attention span you may find it difficult to enjoy the game. It can feel slow.
