Superhot is a fast-paced puzzle rather than just an FPS game. Its famous motto spoken at the beginning summarizes everything: "Time moves only when you move." Thanks to this simple mechanic, the game sets itself apart from combat and action games, turning into a Matrix simulation where we dodge bullets. The game generally takes place in minimalist environments. White rooms, red enemies, and black weapons. A simple, easy on the eyes, and memorable atmosphere.
Story and Gameplay
Every step we take is a decision, and every bullet is a risk. We can even stop a bullet floating in mid-air with our gun, which is one of the elements deepening the gameplay. While playing the game, it feels like we are playing chess. We must make every move carefully, and additionally, we need to analyze our surroundings thoroughly. While clearing enemies ahead of us, threats suddenly appearing from behind or from our right can ruin our entire plan. In fact, it sends a message that the more we try, the more flawless it becomes. With every mistake, we learn something new and act with more experience the next time.
Even though the game's story is short, it is quite striking. We are a user sitting in front of a computer. We log into the game via an old operating system. Let's not forget that our friend recommended this game, well, at least that's what we thought... After playing for a bit, we realize this is not just a game, but a kind of mind data transfer protocol. Although the game tries to kick us out early on, we have already become addicted to it. At times the system challenges us, at times it belittles us, and even orders us to quit the game. I want to mention a neat detail here. When it tells us to quit and we refuse and keep playing, we get kicked out of the game, which surprised me a bit. When we launch it again, it says things like "you're not going to give up, are you?" and lets us continue.
One of the striking parts of the story is the phrase "MIND IS SOFTWARE - BODIES ARE DISPOSABLE". The system tries to sever us from our physical body in the real world and turn us entirely into a digital soldier. Past a certain point, the game tries to scare us by claiming it knows our real-world room. After a while, the game symbolizes an addiction loop. It does not force us to stay inside, in fact, as I mentioned, it even tries to throw us out up to a point. In the end, we are no longer a player, but a part of the system. We trigger the finale by shooting our own body. ONE OF US.
The fourth wall is broken multiple times in the game, such details are great. Even though it finishes in around 2 hours, it is a very memorable experience.
