Had a good feeling about this one from the screenshots and trailer video, and sure enough it was just a wonderful little romp. Practically a love letter to 90s era handheld RPGs like Final Fantasy Legend or Pokemon, but with modern day sensibilities like faster movement & freedom to experiment. Being able to choose from a variety of palette choices was really nice, even if I never figured out how Custom was supposed to work.
The gameplay is smooth and simple. You have basic ammunition, which doubles as a sort of currency to obtain other kinds of bullets in exchange, and you have your war gear which is really just your healing items, bombs, and other stuff. Every time you finish a battle, the enemy drops a handful of different ammo along with some more basic bullets. Or sometimes it'll be scrap, which is great cause you use that stuff to craft more bombs, first aid kits, and other handy items.
The game is very generous with scrap and bullets, which allows for you to play how you want. Many enemies have weaknesses like explode, ice, or shock that you can capitalize on via grenades or special ammo. Personally I found myself abusing the hell out of Molotov cocktails since they'll hit every enemy and can be a good opening move. Combat items like grenades will also damage enemies that are largely unaffected by your guns, too, so it's important to always have some on hand either way.
Both the upgrades for your guns and the skill parameters you can increase can be reset for free at any time if you're not happy with how it turned out. I'd suggest putting plenty into Luck since it affects the drops after battle. The game's level cap is only 30, as well, which is fine cause this isn't the longest game to begin with. I found the length very agreeable, it never wore out its welcome.
Don't want to spoil anything related to the story, but I enjoyed it a lot. Honestly a lot better written than anything that actually came out in that contemporary 90s era. I sincerely doubt this will get a sequel, just from how it all plays out, but I would love to see another game like it since the developers have clearly got the look, feel, and pacing down.

Sometimes a game is exactly what it advertises. For a Vast Future is a bite-sized RPG with Gameboy inspired graphics, interesting gameplay, and a decent story and characters.
