Good game, I am huge fan of the Disgaea franchise.
Fair warning, although Steam shows that this game is verified and compatible for the Steam Deck, it is absolutely not. It does not progress beyond the first loading screen after the intro.
So, I would recommend playing this on a Windows system.

if fire emblem is a street fight then disgaea is a crack fueled back alley under the table sanctioned fight between two nyc rats.

if disgaea is a big family, the first one is the edgy one, the second is the romantic one, the third one is the nerd, and the fourth one is the political connosieur.
its maybe one of the more "mature" ones (if you could have some maturity in the franchise), with the characters being all about making a coup to the government.
its a really fun game, one of the tightest disgaeas in term of gameplay, story, music, and overall fun.
here comes the obligatory friendly reminder when looking at the series: no, you don't and shouldn't have to grind to have fun.
yes, the game flounders everywhere about all the nines they could get in a character, but thats the aftergame. grinding before ending the story will only ruin the experience. but grinding after the game is over is one of the most entertaining parts of the game, its not about grind, its about optimizing grind, getting a strategy about how to develop your characters its part of the fun. its not like an rpg with hard bosses where the only exit is grinding. here the aftergame is about having that boss that invites you to grind. or to shutdown the game and go play something else.
its a well balanced game, and a total improvement from 3. and maybe the best 2d disgaea if you ignore DD2.
i would totally recommend it as your first disgaea, because is this is not your first one, i'm really surprised that you have not play it yet.

I played this one on the PS4 back in the day, and I gotta say, one of my favorite entries into the series.
Amusingly funny, decent characters, Magichange is awesome, the Territory board makes some new fun mechanics, and overall the game is solid and well done.
At this point, I hope they bring Disgaea 3 to the PC sooner or later so we can finally all enjoy it in it's entirety without hunting down a PS3/Vita and a copy/ sailing the high seas just to be able to play it.

Quaky protagonist, fun combat, decent story and the new features were fun.
The supporting cast was rather boring.

Just amazing, improvement after improvement quality of live changes exactly what game needed compared to "rough" Disgaea 1 and 2 experience. Voice acting was good in previous episodes and overall is best from japaneese companies but this game is in my opinion on another level got JP dubbing and hearing MC just yelling IWASHI(sardies) makes me chuckle. Art and visuals are lovely definitly best yet, soundtrack and music is biggest change for better of course. I just love when game companies do this, they manage to get solid base for the game and than over the years they stay loayal to it and just keep improveing on it, it just makes life journy and unforgettable experience. And many succesful companies do with their series like Capcom (Monster Hunter,Resident Evil,Devil may cry, etc.) and From Software with dark souls engine. -Developers of this game are IMO underrated also if you wanna play Disgaea series and dont wanna start from 1 just start with this one.

This game probably has the best cast in the series. While I love this game, I do think it is overshadowed completely by 5 and probably 7 of this series.
