Maiden and Spell
Maiden & Spell is a one-on-one magical girl aerial projectile battler, featuring a colorful cast of ladies fighting with fantastic spells.
Battling with magic is simple! Fire your spells, hit your opponent, and don’t get hit yourself! Each maiden is color-coded and has a set of abilities unique to them, activated at a press of a button. There aren’t any complicated combos or intricate inputs or grabs or melee attacks or block buttons! Just a 3-pixels-wide hitbox, a lot of shiny bullets, and your own dodging skills.
You can fight against a friend in Versus Mode, or test your skill against a series of opponents and bullet hell boss attacks in Story Mode.
An abyss on the edge of the map, said to be the most dangerous dungeon in the world… The Great Circle. A group of young adventurers travel down into its depths in search of a powerful treasure.
Awaiting them are cute monsters, nonsensical architecture, and an ancient city once known as The Kingdom of Stars….

Both singleplayer and multiplayer modes are fun. I never expected a bullet-hell fighting game to be this enjoyable.

As a singleplayer experience or as a game to play with friends, absolutely recommend, without a shadow of a doubt. The game's community borderline ruins the experience though, especially on the official server. Toxicity and snakes galore. Stick to friends or play the singleplayer experience.

Single-player mode is primarily "just" a competent bullet hell - reasonably fun to play through, but I wouldn't call it outstanding. Shmup veterans will also find the Normal difficulty extremely easy, as in 1CC or even Perfect first try easy - at least the first four missions, because what happens next is quite a difficulty spike (and the best part of the game, naturally). Sadly, you also don't get to play in the story as about half of the available characters, which is a tad disappointing. Honestly, I think that Rabbit and Steel - the next game by the same dev - has a much better single-player mode all around if that's what you're primarily interested in.
What Rabbit and Steel does not have, though, is a wonderful PvP shmup fighter experience. If you can get even a single friend to play you're in for a great time - even if the friend in question is on the opposite side of the globe, as netcode rocks. There's a surprising amount of depth to it and balancing is done quite well despite a diverse selection of movesets.
All in all, it's a definite recommendation if you have someone to play with and a maybe otherwise. Story is mostly just there and music is enjoyably, although both were improved upon by Rabbit and Steel. Artstyle is nice, with no issues with visual clarity, and there's also an art gallery as a bonus. High refresh rates are supported and so are direct P2P connections; no automatic port forwarding with UpNP, though. Hoping to get a proper sequel one day!

the idea of a pvp touhou-like may sound horrible on paper, but when executed properly can be such a unique experience. Maiden and Spell is a perfect example of this. With an adorable art style, a clean learning curve, a wacky cast of characters, and a loving die hard community. I just cant put the game down! Plus it somehow runs on my crappy laptop!!

The only online game where ping doesnt matter because your opponent is better than you anyway

charming and fascinating pvp bullet hell/fighting game that wears its inspiration on its sleeves (I recognized many touhou spell cards in the boss patterns, even if they're mixed up a bunch and never copypasted) and even manages to surpass it, if we look at how polished, deep and engaging the whole gameplay loop feels like. it's more than just "what if touhou pvp games were good" and you can feel the passion and care in every nook and cranny of the game. I also really appreciated how you can look at concept art and the thought process of the dev in the extra section, it's always a nice touch
