FINAL FANTASY VIII
It is a time of war. Galbadia, a Global Superpower, has declared war on Dollet, a country whose training academy is home to two personalities: the hot-headed Seifer and the ‘lone wolf’, Squall Leonhart. Both are equally at conflict with each other as their country is with Galbadia; to others, Squall appears lacking in team spirit, while Seifer lacks the discipline of his rival. However, a chance encounter with the free-spirited Rinoa Heartilly turns Squall’s universe upside down; having thrived on discipline, Squall find the carefree Rinoa fascinating. He also begins to dream that he is Laguna Loire, a Galbadian army soldier…
Meanwhile, a sorceress manipulates the most powerful men in Galbadia.
Will Squall and his party succeed in defeating this maniacal sorceress and saving their world?
What part does the mysterious Laguna play? Only you can decide what happens next, as the greatest Role Playing Adventure of all time returns…

Top 3 games of my life. I honestly don't understand all the hatred it got. If 8 years old me without knowing english can figure the junction system out then so can you! The story and the characters are amazing and I'm willing to die on this hill. Not giving this game a chance from you and a remake from the devs would be a HUGE mistake!

Every complaint I've ever heard about this game has stemmed from one of two things. First, it's that "it's not Final Fantasy VII" from Cloud fanboys with no taste, and second that "Drawing magic is stupid." To the people who say the first, I say you're right, and thank goodness for that. To the second, I say that you're playing the game wrong.
The only times you need to use Draw are to grab the handful of GFs from bosses, or if you run across a particularly rare magic from a Draw Point in the world. Outside of that, you should be using a combination of the Card ability and GF refinement to get your magic. I find that the most critical people of the game genuinely don't understand its mechanics because the game doesn't hold your hand or give you pretty colored rocks to play with like they do in VII, and it expects that you experiment and encourages you to break its systems.
The game has a competent story (yes, even including the time compression,) relatable characters, and one of the best designs for mechanics and systems across the whole franchise that encourages freedom and doesn't pigeonhole you into useless stats and narrow builds like so many mediocre JRPGs.
Ben Starr said it best: "Final Fantasy VIII is and always has been an S-tier Final Fantasy game."

It's a great game but a mediocre port. I had a hell of a time with mapping a controller. The "Default" controller settings are all wrong and it changes the START and SELECT button to L3 and R3 and there's no way to change it after you've hit "Default" controller settings.
Also I would have preferred if they stuck with the Playstation controller scheme, because let me tell you, finding out what B1, B2, B3 ~ B9 were, was a giant pain in the a**.
Other than that, game runs flawlessly. Volume is a bit high.

I've played this game since 1999, and I finally bought it on steam. I think this is one of the best games ever made, and I'll die on that hill. The junction system makes the game incredibly fun for returning players, and creates a very unique system for first timers. The story (although admittedly convoluted near the end) is deep and rich and the characters are fantastic. Squall's development is natural and relatable, and him and Rinoa's relationship is a great romance. The world is huge (especially for it's time) and the replay value is immense. 10/10 stars.

Great game as always but I hope the person who thought "Let's put a kill 10000 enemies achievement" on a videogame that literally wants you to avoid combat was fired.

FF8, the black sheep of Final Fantasy. Though in my opinion overhated. For context this was my first Final Fantasy, granted when I first was introduced had no idea what I was doing and couldn't get past that mech spider cause "someone" (you know who you are) didn't tell me how I was supposed to run away from it after beat it down LOL. But over the years I've come to cherish this one, for its visuals style, the unique gameplay, and those sweet FMV sequences that still hold up today. Heck the idea of being able to move your character during a lot of them was a pretty unique thing for the time, even if nowadays it does look a bit goofy n out of place.
Triple Triad no one can ever say was a bad idea, a fun minigame that when you master can help you break the game. And thats another reason why I love this game, the fact if you know exactly what you are doing you can completely break this game like Bane breaks Batmen over his knee.
Is this game flawless...OH HELL NAW, the plot goes completely insane at Disc 2, the junction system is confusing and punishes you for using magic as you need maxed magic to get best gains, the fact if you grind experience enemies get stronger further punishing you, like in FF7 minigames do suddenly show up out of know where (though not as annoying), the characters are pretty one note and flat, even with the hindsight of realizing that they are all a bit of a deconstruction of the child soldier archetype (seriously if you look at Squall as a moody teen with PTSD not to mention being an orphan all his life, his attitude suddenly makes a lot more sense) and you get a mess of a game.
And I freakin love it all. Yes its dumb, yes its broken, and yes its completely and utterly deserving of its Black Sheep Status...but I still love this game. If there was a game that deserved the FF7 Remake treatment, I feel like this one really would benefit from it. The pieces to a great story is here, just with hindsight and better writing can it be elevated to something greater.
As for this port, skip it, I only completed it cause I already had it from years ago, but nowadays the remastered port is better...except for one thing. This is the only port that throws in the Chocobo world minigame, in the remaster everything you can find from chocobo world is found in another ways, but thats like the only thing this port has that the remastered doesn't.
So yeah, thats my thoughts, onward to the next final fantasy...
