This game is quite the gem.
The art style and music is definitely retro inspired, and if you've played Pirates! Gold or a handful of other seafarer games there's some of that familiar feeling here. The music is chirpy and upbeat, absolutely loved the main sea theme and the diving music was appropriately moody.
Game play consists of an over world (over sea?) where your primary action is sailing around looking for spots to dive for treasure. The world is full of things out to get you, from random encounters with a variety of sea denizens to water spouts and shallows that smash your boat. When you defeat an enemy vessel on the sea you can gain levels that increase your passive percentage of a loot-successful dive.
Once you've found a spot to dive, the second part of the game begins. The dive game is a bit arcade like, trying to sink to the bottom and pop open a chest before you get eaten or bleed out from a bite. This is quite a bit of fun, and required some timing and practice to get to the point where I was wrecking sea monsters. I highly recommend using the keyboard bind (default K) to shoot harpoons as opposed to trying to use the mouse.
After you've recovered the chest there's one of a few things that happen : you get gold, a relic, or nothing. Gold and relics can be turned into the sea port to trade for more crew, food, harpoons, and additional cargo space. There are only so many relics in the sea, and while collecting them all wins you the game you'll have to risk everything and travel through the maelstrom into the under-blood-ocean to get the last few. Every time you leave the port the game is auto saved, which is nice considering that it both promotes a sense of challenge to get back and forth alive, but also is a bit forgiving in a game where many tidbits of play aren't very obvious.
I had a ton of fun with this and finished an almost 100% complete achievement run in about 3 hours. If I had any criticism it would be that its often hard to tell whether or not your boat will scrape in the shallows and its hard to tell what and how the different combat styles during boat battles helps/harms your crew. That said, these by no way detracted from my enjoyment of the game and I absolutely recommend it.
