Creepy puzzle fun. Difficult enough to be challenging. Good point & click. Will keep an eye out for more like this.

I don't usually play horror games, so this one was almost too much for me. =)
The puzzles were just difficult enough. Great atmosphere. The movement system took a little bit of getting used to, but it was fine.
After finishing the game, I'm left with just one question : what is the significance of the adoption papers ? But perhaps that is explained in the other games ?

Forgotten Hill: The Third Axis, developed and published by FM Studio, represents a bold step forward for a series that has long relied on 2D point-and-click horror. This installment transitions into a fully 3D, first-person experience, attempting to deepen immersion while preserving the eerie identity that has defined the franchise. Rather than abandoning its roots, the game builds on them, retaining its focus on puzzle-solving and unsettling storytelling while reimagining how players interact with its disturbing world.
You take on the role of an investigator tied to the enigmatic “Third Axis,” tasked with uncovering the truth behind a disappearance in the twisted setting of Forgotten Hill. The narrative unfolds in fragments, relying on environmental storytelling, cryptic notes, and bizarre encounters to slowly reveal its secrets. There is very little hand-holding; instead, the game trusts players to piece together its lore through observation and deduction. This approach works well in maintaining intrigue, as each new discovery feels like a step deeper into something unnatural and quietly menacing.
The gameplay remains centered on exploration and puzzles, but the shift to 3D changes how these elements are experienced. Instead of static scenes, players now move freely through interconnected environments, examining objects from multiple angles and interacting with the world in a more direct way. The puzzles themselves are varied, ranging from logical challenges to more abstract riddles that require careful attention to detail. Many solutions are cleverly integrated into the environment, rewarding players who take the time to observe patterns and subtle clues. When the design clicks, it delivers genuinely satisfying moments of realization.
However, the transition to a first-person perspective is not without its drawbacks. Movement and interaction can occasionally feel imprecise, with certain objects or hotspots requiring extra effort to engage with. This can interrupt the otherwise steady flow of puzzle-solving, especially in moments where clarity is essential. While these issues are not constant, they are noticeable enough to slightly detract from the overall experience, particularly for players accustomed to smoother navigation in similar games.
Where the game truly excels is in its atmosphere. The world of Forgotten Hill has always been defined by its grotesque and unsettling aesthetic, and this installment amplifies that through its immersive perspective. Environments are filled with disturbing details, from warped architecture to unsettling character designs, all contributing to a pervasive sense of unease. The sound design enhances this further, using ambient noise and subtle audio cues to create tension even in moments of stillness. It’s not a game that relies on sudden scares, but rather one that maintains a constant, creeping discomfort.
In terms of scope, the experience is relatively short, which can be both a strength and a limitation. The game maintains a focused pace, avoiding unnecessary filler, but it may leave players wanting a deeper or more expansive journey. Once the puzzles are solved, there is little incentive to revisit the game beyond appreciating its atmosphere again. Additionally, minor technical issues and occasional rough edges in presentation remind you of its indie origins, though they rarely overshadow the core experience.
Ultimately, Forgotten Hill: The Third Axis succeeds in evolving the series while staying true to its identity. It delivers a compact but engaging horror puzzle experience that emphasizes mood, curiosity, and careful observation. While the shift to 3D introduces some imperfections, it also enhances immersion and gives the game a fresh perspective. For fans of atmospheric puzzle games, it offers a memorable journey into a strange and unsettling world, even if it doesn’t fully realize its potential in every aspect.
