Venus the Flytrap
Originally released in 1990 for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST computers, this side-scrolling platformer/shoot-em-up hybrid from prolific British developers Gremlin Graphics saw players take on the role of a robotic fly, tasked with saving the world from hordes of mutant cybernetic killer insects – the result of a disastrous attempt to restore the planet’s ecological balance after the extinction of all insect life. Now, relive those days in this remastered emulated version.
This is an emulation of the Commodore Amiga version of the game.
Gameplay
Jump and shoot across 10 exciting worlds, each with 5 platforming levels. Collect powerups from defeated enemies that can give you anything from faster speed or an extra life, to one of an array of powerful weapons. As you fly from world to world, experience bonus side-scrolling shoot-em-up levels – try to collect as many points as you can! Also, hidden around the worlds are 20 secret rooms – look for the doors to them in obscure places…
This enhanced version introduces a number of modern features to this retro classic, including:
- Saving/loading the game at any point
- Support for most modern game controllers
- Full control remapping
- Image scaling and smoothing options

There's some minor issues with sound emulation, just a few pops on intro music, but seems great in game.
Plenty of emulation options and save states, and most importantly, very low input lag! (Bluetooth 8bitdo controller).
The reason I recommend this is that it's a nice little platform shmup for the price, that is actually longer than most Amiga shmup type games. There's decent power ups, and music the entire way whilst playing. They have also auto assigned jump to a button so they have it as a 2 button game.
However, pressing up still jumps, and an option to disable that, just to go that extra mile, would certainly be appreciated.
All Amiga platform games were like that though.
I am absolutely looking forwards to playing this one right through again. I know it's not a short game for the genre cause I owned it in my A500 days, so I knew the game well and just wanted to test how it felt to play so I could decide whether to recommend it or not.
I certainly do recommend it. It's worth the price. PS it even has music and fx together for the entire game, and that can not be said for many Amiga games!
For new players, here's a tip. If you run out of ammo on a power up, hold fire and down then go left or right to select a different weapon or your unlimited ammo base weapon.
Cheers:)
