Good game, interesting mix of mechanics. What I like is this constant need to use cards. Usually Im hoarding usable items but here you have limited inventory for those and at the same time you are being being fed to new cards which encourage to experiment. And combos itself are great, they can sometimes lead to unexpected and fun situations. Overall interesting title, I can recommend it.

The game is fantastic. I highly recommend it to all fans of turn-based games that require skill. The aiming mechanic effectively prevents monotony, a common issue in games of this type. Both the demo and the full version of the game impressed me greatly. The implemented changes perfectly complemented the whole.

Great turn-based combat, dressed in cute 16-bit graphics with some funny banter between characters, and wittly written story. You wouldn't dare to miss that Bear(nard).

At first game might seem a bit generic - you're a bear in the woods, you fight with wolves, then you go to the mines and fight with goblins... Sure, turn-based combat in a 2D platform game is something I've never seen before, but I thought "What's the point of having cards in your game if you can't build your own deck" (because Bearnard isn't about deckbuilding, once you use a card, it's gone).
But right in the tutorial you see how awesome this gameplay is and the further you go the better it gets. You don't make the strategy that you use over and over (like in most deckbuilding games) but you have to come up with the best plan for every fight from the cards you picked up. And because there are 69 cards in the game (*nice*) and dozens of enemies in different environments, there are hundreds if not thousands of possibilities for every fight.
Once I thought there was no way I could survive this one fight because I had bad cards, low HP and many monsters to kill. Had to repeat the fight like 10 times until I came up with the genius idea to position myself, so I could hit enemies, but they couldn't hit me and with the smart combination of cards I hadn't thought of before I managed to win the fight and it was such a great feeling <3 I felt like a genius, like I outsmarted the enemies and the game itself, but in fact the game is specifically designed to encourage such unconventional tactics.
I really recommend this game to everyone, even if you don't like turn-based games. Bearnard is a really well made game, no bugs, game feels super responsive and super smooth.

Quite unique and engaging mix of 2D Platformer type of exploration with turn-based combat. The main features of this game, and what makes this unique, is that, even if it is turn-based, you have to aim your own shots, taking gravity and enemy movement into consideration, and also you can (and have to) use cards that in this case are consumables (so, take notice, this is not really a deckbuilder) to temporarly boost your stats or just do a different type of attack. The game is harder than what you might think, but the balance make it really enjoyable, in a way that the game forces you to use your consumables, but at the same time it is constantly rewarding you with more, so you can keep trying different moves and combinations.
There are different biomes, each one with different enemies, also forcing you to change the way you engage each battle/enemy, adding enough variety so you don't get bored during your over 10 hours of gameplay.
The game also counts with elemental damage and the mechanic of combining different elements, in a way that order matters (so, fire+water is not the same than water+fire), generating really interesting and useful combos for you to try.
Overall, a pretty solid turn-based game for fans of the genre 8.5/10, just don't come here thinking this is a deckbuilder/roguelike.

Bernard is a very nice game, focusing on arcade platformer and tactical turn-based duels. The game is distinguished by it's calm and fluid pace of playability, which is very refreshing and different from "modern" games. The cards are a nice addition and core mechanics of entire game and it fits perfectly. Game is not so hard if you find best mix of cards and you learn to handle the bow. Finally, it's also worth mentioning the cool soundtrack and the main character's biting sense of humor. I will call Bernard a "cozy indie gem" definitely worth of play.

I don't play many pixel art, indie games, but this one has something addictive to it.
Light platforming combined with physics based arrow shooting mechanic is pretty unconventional combination, right? Add card based boosters, elemental damage and many more effects (walls, spikes, push into lava, even blue poo of Blue - Bearnard's familliar) and combat turns very interesting indeed. This turn based combat is not easy by any means, but all encounters are possible to win. Worst, that can happen is, you'll have to repeat a few times to try out different approaches. And winning of harder fights is very satisfying
There is even a little bit of a story to follow (some dialogues and notes to find) and the comments of the main protagonist, Bearnard after a won fight are sometimes priceless. Like "Loser". Or "Winning is boring". Short and grumpy :-D
I play the game on Steam Deck OLED and it works and looks perfectly there. 90 FPS, projected battery life over 9 hours :-) No bugs spotted so far.
5 hours into the game and I'm in the 2nd biome (mines after the 1st one, which is forest). I think there are five in total, so can't wait to see them all :-)
Highly recommended!
