As the natural environment deteriorated during the middle of the 21st century, powerful illness have once again risen up as they did during the dark ages.
As the 21st century wore on, the earth’s natural environment continued to decline at an alarming rate. Rising from this new dark age are powerful diseases and illnesses, reminiscent of the plagues from times long passed. The probability of becoming infected by a serious illness has sharply increased, while at the same time traditional medical techniques have become less effective.
In the face of such an onslaught, large-scale pharmaceutical companies have begun to invest large amounts of money and manpower into the study and development of nano-machine technology. From this medicinal arms race the NCR (Nano Core Robot) was born – a new and highly effective weapon in the war against sickness. But is this truly the savior we have been calling for, or is there something more lurking beneath the surface.
Bacterium puts players behind the controls of an NCR nano-machine. In the name of the global pharmaceutical corporation you work for, become a frontline soldier in the war against the viruses.

This is a very unique and hidden gem of a game about controlling a state-of-the-art medical nanite. You explore, discover and treat serious medical conditions while inside patients. These patients are sent to you from doctors that do not know what is wrong. The combat is innovative and requires the player to think about positioning and resources for an attack. There is also a decent RPG element of upgrading the nanite, its abilities and catering to how you would like to play. The boss fights can be real tough too as they are usually the main culprit to what is causing the patient to be real sick or dying. The story is a little slow in the beginning but then takes a real dark turn of events that left me wanting to know what the hell was happening. Would recommend if looking for a different change of pace in gaming.

I tried Bacterium for a while. And even after an hour I didn't understand some mechanics and parts of the game. It has too much information on the screen and not all the things are made intuitive.
That's a case when a lot of details that developer tried to describe and implement into the game can distruct and make it overloaded.
I wasn't impressed by gameplay, it's still a close book for me. But I will give this game a positive review because there could be people that will like it.

Verdict. It was a very strange experience. I can't even name a genre. Top-down shooter RPG? Possibly, but it even stands apart from typical representatives and feels like it's not my game.

In coffee terms, Bacterium is like an exotic blend from a country you’ve never been too, at first it might seem weird and you might think it’s not for me, but once you have a few sips and get the taste, you’ll realise it’s not all that different from the coffee you’re used to at home and you can happily enjoy a cup now and then.
