“How quick can a top-down shooter be before breaking the gameplay?”
BULLETHELL is an experimental, retro-hardcore, barely playable, ultra-fast-paced arena top-down shooter.
With the classic WASD+Mouse controls (UBERMOSH, QUICKERFLAK), the match starts with a duel that may be resolved in the first second. It gets progressively harder with more contestants entering the fight.
It can go endless, but each second is a victory that you can track with your personal best time and rank, scoring “SSS” in 30+ seconds.
Players can expect a hard-boiled gameplay experience with responsive controls, complex enemy AI, isometric pixel art, and awesome original music.
Welcome to BULLETHELL!

He is... not even trying anymore is he XD. I feel like Walter is the only developer who can get away with re-releasing an inferior version of his previous games, honestly they getting worse dude, they really do. At least he mentioned "barely playable" in the store description so at least there is some self-awareness, the title makes me think it's a meme though, I can't really tell anymore.
Honest question though, Ubermosh was simple, but it worked because of the pacing, and then you made these "intense" versions which had less enjoyable feel to them because it was less about reacting and more about spamming, which always felt like a decay of a good game to me. Now you made a game that literally offers nothing, so I can't even laugh at it, I am not exactly sure what you are trying to do, is it to make me laugh, you make the same game with less and less aesthetic appeal to it?
Some of my friends actually really liked Ubermosh, why not take what that game did well, just the feel of the combat, and maybe just add a bit more variety to it or maybe even just more visual diversity, maybe not complexity because I get it's not what you trying to do, but just more things to kill or more simple mechanics, actually make it better, instead of making it worse with every new release.
Maybe I am just crazy taking these games too seriously, but I would like to see Ubermosh but More, not Ubermosh but.. less. And I don't mean speed it up to a point where it's not actually fun to react to bullets anymore and call it intelligent AI.
Anyway, don't take this too seriously, I am just looking at your game that was kind of a cult classic on Steam that had 2600 reviews, and then you barely scratched 300 cuz you making the same game with less compelling timing. I am really not trying to be funny or give you criticism, all I am saying I want to see a better Ubermosh game that actually improves on how it felt, instead of making it worse and worse with each new addition.

Playing this game is an intense challenge, demanding skill and resilience as you navigate through just under a minute of gripping agony. Moreover, the game subtly hints that the letter "S" symbolizes the developer's penchant for sadism.

It is a "Walter Machado" game. That means it is true old school hardcore, you may break your keyboard or get a heart attack if you can't handle it. Everything is tunned to 12, heavy music, all damage is overkill, and there is no fake gameplay. You have to fight every second. It is a Walter Machado game and I will buy again and gift a friend weak of heart.

Walter somehow managed to make an even faster-paced iteration on the ubermosh 'saga'(?)
It's great for people that have already played his other games and want even more of a challenge ,, that being said I definitely wouldn't recommend it as an introduction into his games if you haven't played one of them before :: try out another UBERMOSH game (or all of them) and only then come back to BULLETHELL.
As a side note, I've seen reviews criticize how this game (and others in the UBERMOSH saga) appears to them as just a blatant republish of older games with one or more features added (or removed). I think presenting this is missing the point f Walter's development mentality as a whole : the idea is that he'll find a core idea that works, and then expand on it or make certain features and characteristics more/less prominent, such is the case with his UBERMOSH games : there's a core gameplay loop that works that is presented to you in the first iteration, and then all of the other games are expansions on said 'core idea'. If your criticism of BULLETHELL is that it's not innovative enough , you're looking at it from the wrong lens: the game is not sold as a new fancy idea, the whole point is that it's trying to reach the limit of one base idea (UBERMOSH in this case)

edit: there have been very nice updates since i wrote this. it's much more pleasant to look at for extended periods with more visual variety for each run, and the addition of multiple classes and enemies make it feel much less monotonous. good stuff. original day 1 review below.
I got to 20 seconds on my second try. It's pretty simple, you kinda just pay attention to where the guys are coming from and make sure you strafe around them while clicking on them quickly/accurately enough to not get overrrun, then slam rightclick for ur sword if they're close. Very simple game, is what it says it is. I think it could do with a bit more visual variety, like a few differently colored backgrounds or something.

It's a less interesting and harder version of Ubermosh. I only recommend it to those that have already mastered all the Ubermosh games.
É uma versão mais difícil e menos interessante de Ubermosh. Só recomendo mesmo pra quem já zerou toda a série Ubermosh.

Bought on sale! This game is so damn hard! I need more practice but I have enjoyed every bit of it so far! From reading the Steam reviews, it seems I'm not the only one. Really nice style of graphics and the whole pixel look fits very well. Glad I was able to stumble upon this game.
