I always appreciate when a developer continues to fix a game even when there seems to be no hope of recovering from its infamy. Apparently, there were problems like not being able to switch spells while moving, not being able to move while or after dashing, enemies completely flooding platformer levels, progress and button remapping not being saved, etc.. I can only imagine how much I would've hated this game if I had played it any earlier than November 10th of 2025. Unfortunately, because it's two years old at the time of this writing, everyone had already moved on, which means that most people probably aren't going to care that it's better now. The sour taste had already left a lasting impression on them and I don't see them giving this game a second chance anytime soon. Even if they did, there's still only so much that you can do to improve this game without just flat out remaking the whole thing. I'm just hoping that this will be a good learning experience for the devs and these updates will show people that they want to make something good and win their good graces back by the time they make their next game, whatever that may be.

So I held off on buying this game for a long time because of the negative reviews. But recently, the developers released a major update last month announcing adjustments, improvements, and new bosses so I decided to give the game a try. I am a huge Cuphead fan, and I was hopeful that even if this game was a third of what a great game that Cuphead is, I would be happy. Now, that being said, this game is not as good as Cuphead, not even close. But, I would describe it as Cuphead-Lite. And I have to say, I enjoyed this game very much. It obviously has the Cuphead feel, the devs have not been shy about their desire to pay homage to Cuphead. And I feel like they did a pretty good job at nailing some of the aspects that make Cuphead a great game.
Enchanted Portals obviously has gorgeous graphics, character animation, and backgrounds. The character movement is also pretty good as well. The Jump, Double-Jump, and Dash all feel smooth. Shooting is responsive, and the 3 bullet types didn't bother me as much as it apparently bothered some other people. I mean these devs had to change it up at least a little bit as compared to Cuphead. The Run & Gun levels were a little repetitive, but they were still somewhat enjoyable. Obviously, the highlight of a game like this is the boss battles, I thought they were creative, challenging and fun. They even added some new bosses with this new update, I really enjoyed the new Painter boss! I played thru all the levels as well as the new bosses in about 3-4 hours, so it is short and sweet. I'm not sure why the Steam page says no controller support, I played the whole game with my Xbox controller and it worked fine. I give credit to the developers for sticking with this game, still adding new content and refining their game even over 2 years after its initial release. A lot of devs would have just abandoned the game after the initial negative reviews, but they stuck with it, are making improvements, adding new content, and I think the game has turned into something to be proud of. I wanted to post this positive review, hopefully other people who enjoyed the update will as well, and maybe we can get some momentum built for these devs and this game. Perhaps, turn the overall Steam reviews from Negative to MIxed or Positive. I mean, more games like Cuphead is NEVER a bad thing, am I right!

Although it being accused of being a Cuphead ripoff (and that being mostly true) it is still a fun game to play after you've done everything in Cuphead and don't have anything else to do in the game. Also the bad physics and hitboxes make the game a rage game for all the wrong reasons, but still a good rage game. Would recommend for fun! Doesn't deserve all the hate (especially after something like Rubberhose Rampage exists)
