Very solild fangame with a lot of soul, amazed by the fact that it's completely free honestly. Surprisingly hard too even on normal, at least compared to what I'm used to. Lots of fast bullets that are not afraid to kill you.

A surprisingly solid fan-made Touhou danmaku shooter that answers the age-old question:
"Where did all the bubble attacks in Touhou go?"
Because wow, they all ended up in this game. There are SO. MANY. BUBBLES!
Outside of the extreme amount of bubble-based attacks, there are no real mechanical "gimmicks" in this game. You are always at full power, and resources are dished out in full increments only (no pieces), so you can focus purely on the gameplay, which the game itself excels at. Music on the whole is excellent, and provided by a variety of artists (Stage 5 boss and Ex boss themes in particular are *very good*). Visuals are charming and clean, and the danmaku uses the same design language as the official games (which means essentially no unexpected or wonky bullet shapes to throw you off).
My only criticisms are that there are quite a few attack patterns that are either heavily inspired or redressed versions of attacks already seen across the official series (this goes beyond a certain bootleg magician ripping off spells - she's excused), and that the Ex stage difficulty is significantly higher than the base game. Whilst Ex stages being a jump in difficulty is par the course, this one feels far too high relatively speaking (it really reminds me of how the Ex Stage feels in Subterranean Animism).
With that said, the game is distributed for free (???), which is absurd for a game that has had so much passion and care put into it. This is a MUST play for any fan of Touhou danmaku shooters, and especially so for those that are looking for a clean and pure danmaku experience. It's just you, some limited resources, and a lot of bubbles/bullets. Have at it.

Very fun, one the best fangames about Touhou.
Just with some minutes you feel that was made with affection.

The sprites are all amazing.
Toby Fox did one of the compositions.
The dialogue is funny in its own right, even if it isn't similar to ZUN's writing.
I *really* don't get why this game is free, haha.
I mean, I *do* get it's hard to get the mainline Touhou games legitimately, so maybe less people end up paying for the mainline games too.
But c'mon, clearly a lotta effort went into this.
Also, the extra stage theme "Nameless Discord" goes pretty hard -- as do the rest of the compositions, tbh

It's so fun, It's free, and it's got so much love put into it. I highly recommend!

Wonderful Waking World is everything I could ever ask for in a traditional-style Touhou fangame and more. From the music, spritework, spellcard designs, character interactions and references, it's very clear that the game was made with genuine love for the series. While the game doesn't try to take itself too seriously, the story was engaging enough that it kept me interested. The humor is great and all of the callbacks to the main Touhou games were pretty fun to catch.
I appreciate how they put effort into the bad endings and explored the consequences of the protagonists' failures and the long-term effects they had on Gensokyo when they could've easily went with the 'the protagonist couldn't beat the culprit responsible for the incident, seems they need to try again' approach that a lot of Touhou games tend to use. While I do think these endings could've been written a bit better, it's nice that they tried to make them just as engaging as the good endings.
The only flaw that I was able to spot was the sudden difficulty spike when I got to stage 3, though it wasn't much of a bother in subsequent playthroughs. Another minor issue was that the green bullets in stage 4 were a bit hard to notice at times because of how they blend in with the green background. That said, neither of these really impeded my enjoyment of the game, it was still an incredibly fun experience.

Love the quippy dialogue and nods to fandom characters! Amazing pixel art graphics and spectacular soundtrack. Just the right amount of difficulty to make it accessible to beginner players like myself. Can't wait to see more!
