No One But You
No One But You is a Visual Novel/Dating Sim about Hideaki, a high school student who has just returned to his hometown, Okutama.
Upon returning, Hideaki re-discovers a town he knew from childhood, meeting new friends and reuniting with those he had long forgotten. He resumes his high school life in the big city, quickly adapting to the change in pace, and before he knows it, Hideaki begins to think of this city as his home once more.
Hideaki’s life in Okutama is upbeat and fun, thanks to the many friends he makes, including Megumi, an energetic student council member; Chinatsu, a reserved senior in the literature club; Shiro, an unsociable music-lover; and Yui, an obstinate girl who rarely expresses herself honestly.
Surrounded by an interesting group of friends, Hideaki lives out his days without a care in the world, content to enjoy a normal high school life. Whether he’s going out with friends or studying for exams, his new life is truly peaceful.
But not for long.
As Hideaki’s stay in Okutama continues, ghosts from his past begin to come back, increasingly intruding on the new life he’s trying to build. As if that wasn’t bad enough, his new friends all have secrets of their own, and the more Hideaki involves himself with their daily lives, the deeper into mutual despair he sinks.
Will you be able to put to rest the evils of the past and finally live out the normal high school life you crave? Will you be able to put your friends’ minds at ease, erasing the trauma and misery ruining their otherwise peaceful lives?
Because whether you like it or not, for this very task it can be no one but you.

This game reminds me of Yume Miru Kusuri. It is a visual novel that deals with dark themes and if you don't make the right choices will end badly for your love interest... and possibly all of them, since without your input most of them will still be in their particular trouble. The only one not so much is Chinatsu, whose issue... well, you really can't help with that one...
Anyway, the three other girls are Yui, who has suffered from bullying to an extent where she tries to be a loner. Shiro, who loves music, but whose father... is a bit of a dirtbag. And Megumi, who is dealing with the death of her sister... which she believes she may have caused while trying to save her from a pedophile... who is now free and stalking HER...
There is also a failure route, if you don't manage to pursue any of the four girls... and it ends slightly badly...
Do try it if you have the willpower and stomach for it.
There is a more explicit version out there, and rumors of a patch that may or may not ever come to fruition...

I still haven't been able to finish the Yui route without it crashing and my achievements don't seem to be working but this is a great story. It has some of the deepest characters I've encountered in any VN I've ever read/ played. You get a chance to make many choices, some of them seemingly insignificant to some that are heavy af. It's not even remotely lewd so if you're looking for that, this isn't for you. But if you're in the market for a solid story that can be hilarious and gut wrenchingly sad, No One But You is your jam.

"No One But You" sent me on an emotional rollercoaster during my initial Megumi route. I haven't played through all the routes yet, but one thing that stuck out to me was the fact that the Megumi route seemed slightly forced, due to her character's nature. I suspect that this is likely due to the Megumi route being the most fine-tuned portion of the storyline. Don't get me wrong, this game is incredible. The CG is (for the most part) high A-Tier, and the story, in all the routes I've played, have constantly thrown twists and turns which continued to hook me in.
That said, the game does have multiple bugs I've encountered, two of which stood out the most.
1) The Yui route is bugged, with an error popping up during the arcade/cat arc with something along the lines of "cny rain.png is missing". The work-around I found to work was spamming the skip button found in the bottom left until you can continue with the game. While this didn't take away too much from the storyline & playing experience, I do wish I could've seen the CG and story.
2) The achievement system completely doesn't work. I was for sure skeptical when I first saw that only ~20% of people had successfully OPENED THE GAME, but I didn't think too much of it. Fast forward to the end of my first playthrough, and no achievements showed up. I tried reinstalling, playing different routes, but the achievement system has some issues.
Another thing to note is the way choices work. I found that I was unable to scroll back and change my decision, which was something most VNs I've played allowed. While this does change the experience a bit, I definitely like the added realism (in that, decisions really do matter and you can't change them).
I do remember seeing a few warnings when I first got the game in terms of sensitive content, but the game really threw me for a loop. Although I would've enjoyed the Megumi route a bit more if there was less rape. Damn writers always flock to that when all hope is lost. Disgusting, but a beautiful and tear-jerking story.
So, is this game worth your money? If you can get past minor bugs, and no achievements; then yes, absolutely. I loved (almost) every second of playing this game. The story is, while feeling a bit rushed, quite unique and intriguing. I never knew what would happen next! It is worth noting that some of the CG is poorly drawn, with little resemblance to the character sprites, or sometimes just poorly animated. However this is something I overlooked due to it only being a few scenes. Overall, I strongly recommend you try this game. It's not in my top 10, but it really is something else.

It is rare for me to actually enjoy a visual novel. It did take me a while, but I also finally got the ending with Yui which I had been fighting for and I am super happy. I would like to have a small extra of how things went after the ending as well though.
Definitely a worthwhile one.
