Top-down arcade racing game that is easy to play and will keep you occupied for some time. Sadly, some design decisions really hurt the experience.
The game gets off to a good start thanks to the abundance of manufacturers disguised behind fake brands like Cubaru and Porse. Even though there are many different cars available, a closer look reveals that the number of unique cars is actually quite small because a lot of it is just the same car in a different style. For instance, there are four different models of the Mind Kooper.
There are basically three classes. The first is a typical road vehicle, followed by a race car and lastly a Formula 1 car. Each manufacturer usually has one car for each class, but there are exceptions. Although cars have statistics, the price is still the primary indicator that you're looking at an excellent car.
You hit a small hindrance in the beginning because you can only afford to buy one car with your available funds. However, the game doesn't specify which car it is, so you must go through every brand to find it.
You discover that you require a license once you have the car and are on your way to the races. Actually, if you wish to complete all the races, you need to obtain a number of licenses. These are straightforward tasks that require breaking, turning, and finishing as quickly as you can. If you don't know the track inside and out, including the precise breaking points, winning a gold medal here is impossible.
Now that you have your license in the palm of your hand, you can start racing. It will take you days, if not months, to complete the numerous events. You will need to make money by finishing first since you also require a vehicle that is suitable for your license. The fact that you can repeat any race as often as you like to attain the best possible outcome is great. There are no tournaments here that require you to compete in multiple races back-to-back where a single poor race might quickly ruin your entire standing.
Driving is easy; all you have to do is steer, accelerate, and brake. The fact that the car won't automatically return to a straight line gives it a distinct arcade vibe. Driving may feel a little loose and create the impression that you are constantly correcting your position on the track if you are not accustomed to these controls. You can repair race-related damage in the pit lane, but unless you deliberately collide with other vehicles, you usually won't need to.
With the stock car, you won't get very far, so you'll need to spend a lot of money on several kinds of upgrades. Unfortunately, the difference is not shown on the stats when you select an upgrade. The "purchased" tag on particular item is the only indication that your car is better.
So far, so good. Unfortunately, one design decision that seems more interactive on paper but absolutely fails in reality makes the entire experience irritating. The problem is that you have to literally drive to the upgrade workshop, driving school, and races across a small map rather than being able to select them from a menu. It stinks to start out like this with the slow car. In addition, the map is a blank square with nothing significant on it other than the seven spots.
What's more, every time you exit a location, you're thrown back to the center of the map. So, if you accidentally press back, you'll have to drive to the location again. The painfully slow 1, 2, 3 countdown before the race and on the main map, which serves no purpose whatsoever, was another thing that bothered me. I shouldn't have to wait for a countdown before I can start driving. These are only a few "quality of life" possibilities that should be reconsidered.
