I played this game early on and I can say that it is definitely worth the 3 or 5 dollars it costs. The game has a solid story and retro aesthetic that makes it very fun to play. Solid 8/10

This game is short and sweet with a nice message to boot. The gameplay is simple but satisfying and the art is charming. Don't even get me started on the music (it's amazing btw). Each area of the game has a distinct atmosphere around it that really brings the world to life. Even though the game is short and with only small bits of information it makes for a really engaging world that you want to explore more. It's crazy to see how far this game has come from alpha and I really do think you should consider giving Winter Wastelands a try if you like short and charming games.

Enjoyable game. Love the art, characters and music. The combat gets a little repetitive and the mechanics of checkpoints are confusing at first. Overall a fun game.

Winter Wastelands caught my eye because of its cool title, sci-fi setting, character design, and retro graphics. I was originally planning to wait for a sale to pick it up, but this is one of those rare times when I don't regret buying a game at full price.
This game has had a lot of care and attention to detail put into it. I respect the effort that was put into the world building and level design. Post-launch, an Easy Mode option was patched in. That shows that the developer wants everyone to have the opportunity to have a good time and experience Winter Wastelands, even those lacking the skill or patience to complete the game on Normal.
The gameplay itself reminds me heavily of a specific type of custom, player-built game in Starcraft or Warcraft 3, and that's a good thing. The genres MOBA, Tower Defense, Bounds, Auto Battlers, and Imposter-finders all find their roots in Starcraft's custom games. Maybe this is unknowingly part of its own genre too?
I'll coin the term "Lite RPG" for lack of a better one here. A game which has dialogue with NPCs, item collection/character development, puzzle solving, exploration, world building, and a complete story - while also being generally linear, with few or no side-quests, and short in length compared to a traditional RPG. A game you might be able to finish in a day but still think about in a year. That's what Winter Wastelands is. Eternal Senia (one of the best free games I've ever played) is another example of what I perceive to be a Lite RPG.
I think the reason more games of this category don't exist yet is that there's a very fine line between being a short yet satisfying game with RPG elements that's worth paying for, and feeling like an unfinished or flawed game that should be free. Winter Wastelands is one of the few games to pull it off successfully.
