The self-proclaimed hero, Neptune, awakes in a familiar world, but has no recollection of anything other than her name. With the help of a mysterious girl named Chrome, as well as three other familiar faces beloved in the Neptunia™ series, Neptune embarks on a journey through the mysterious dimension to try to regain her memory. Little do they know, the world they inhabit is under attack by an enemy who wants to take civilization back to the time where 2D reigns supreme. Can Neptune and her friends save the world and 3D games as we know it, or will they be flattened into two dimensions forever?

Was a fun game. More fun that you would think it should be. Compared to the other Neptunia games it isn't as much of a grind. I did miss an achievements and had to go back in a New Game to get it but it took like 30 minutes to get to it. Overall a good time

This is probably the weakest Neptunia game I've played. If you enjoy Neptunia and can ignore this games flaws then it's worth playing once.
This game has 2 main elements - 2D map navigation, and a RPG-like combat system. However unlike your usual RPG combat system you can only have 16 skills set at any one time. Combat consists of 4 formations with 4 characters where your skills map to 4 buttons. You then cycle formation to change which skills are mapped to the 4 buttons. There's no MP or such system - instead there's a counter that increases and once it reaches a value suitable for the skill you want to use it then decreases by that amount. Confusing ><. The in game tutorials are just info dumps and out of context screen shots. I just looked at a guide to understand what the game wants from me because the tutorial is beyond useless.
The gameplay has 2 massive flaws. The first is all party members share the action counter. The problem here being once 1 character uses a skill the counter goes down meaning you can't have multiple skills queued. In practice it means you'll have 4 characters on the field and only 1 doing something. You also can't change your equipped skill during combat. That isn't too much of a problem but the second massive flaw involves the elements system. If you hit a weakness you gain extra counter points meaning you can spam lots of skills. If you hit an immunity, or worse an absorb, you loose counter points, and heal the enemy in the case of absorb. The problem here being if you equip the wrong element you're screwed. Equally if the enemy hits your weakness you get absolutely destroyed because they can spam skills just a much as you. How do you know what element enemies are weak to or attack with. Just memorise them all....
The controls are also a huge problem in combat because there's no feedback as to what's happening. If there was a "queued actions" bar somewhere it would help a lot. Instead you'll press the button to change formation only for it to be ignored, you then press it again, nothing happens, then all of a sudden your party will switch formation 2 times. Equally if a monster is spamming your weakness you can't do anything. They get action priority and you just have to sit there and wait for the game over. Actions and turn order are unclear. Then paired with the awful weakness/resistance system the game plays feel laggy and unresponsive.
The final complaint is the map (the one you access via the back button, not the main gameplay map). It feels like it wasn't designed to be functional. When you're in small maps you won't notice any issues. However larger maps you'll notice that the markers are on a different drawing plane from the map itself. It means as you pan the map a perspective transform takes place and the markers move all over the place. Not to mention sometimes you'll open the map and it's zoomed in on oblivion meaning you need to scroll it back into view.
If you can ignore these flaws the game takes about 10 hours if you don't do all the side quests or go for the achievements. In terms of story I enjoyed it. There are lots of references to old games and it's fun being able to identify all the little bonus references throughout the game. My strategy to get through the game was stay in the healing formation and have Blanc use the Absorb attack because it completely ignores the element system and has a low action counter value. I didn't have to change this approach throughout the entire game meaning the overly complicated combat system is just pointless.
